We recently connected with Jason P. Crawford and have shared our conversation below.
Jason P., we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My sister-in-law proposed that she, my wife Cherrie, and I begin a “writing night” because, as creative and intelligent individuals, we probably had a book in there somewhere. I wrote my first book by hand (which I’ll never do again). That was in 2012. I’ve published thirteen novels since then.
Two years ago, after Cherrie came back from her first Superstars Writing Seminar in Colorado, she had so much to say about the people and the feeling of Tribe and family there. That inspired me further, and I decided that I would make a concerted effort toward pushing forward, to putting my feet in the water and making this writing thing into a career. I got my first fiction sales shortly after.
This last February, I attended the Writing Seminar on a scholarship. I came away with a true understanding of what it is that I love about writing and creating, the joy of it and how it nourishes my soul. Since February, I’ve completed three more novels and they’re only getting better. It’s the thing I love doing most in the world, and I’ve no intention of stopping.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello, all!
Currently, I’m a high school teacher and speculative fiction author. This means that I write things that couldn’t actually happen, as much as we might want them to. My work tends toward character-driven storycraft, relating deeply to both protagonists and antagonists and seeing them as real people. I like when the good guys win, when hope and love triumph over repression and despair, and so I write that into my books and short stories.
The fourth and final novel in my Dragon Monarch series, Dragon Empress, just released on the 15th of July, 2025. I’m working on a science-fiction political thriller set on Venus, on a series of mythic fantasy works revolving around the Greek God Poseidon, and another series of academic fantasy diving into the true meaning of magic.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think that the simplest skill that helps writers succeed in terms of actually writing is to allow yourself to enjoy the process and not get caught up in whether the end product will be amazing or not. If one doesn’t write, one can’t get better at writing, and no amount of worrying or dithering will fix that.
Another important skill is being willing to engage with edits as what they are: suggestions on how to improve your work, not an indictment of your skill as a writer overall. I’ve had editors tell me that they absolutely love a story, and then it comes back with suggestions and corrections all over the place. It can be disheartening, but it’s an important part of the process, and I think that one gets better at it the more they let others in.
A third skill is the discipline of writing. The amount doesn’t really matter, but keeping it consistent does. With a consistent flow, a writer keeps themselves in the story, allowing it guide them rather than having to force it every time they sit down. I’m currently going at 3500 words a day, and if I could write full time it would be more.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last twelve months, I’ve realized exactly how important these acts of creation are to my spirit. Rather than being something I like to do, they’re something I need to do, that I want to do all the time, and that refresh me instead of draining me. That’s let me increase my pace, it lets me improve the quality of my writing, and it’s opened up my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I’m happier now, I’m more fulfilled, and everything–everything–is better.
