We were lucky to catch up with Jason Turner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Impostor syndrome had to nearly destroy before I could mount an effective counter strike and do what was necessary to overcome it. I have been sober for over 20 years. I have immersed myself in service to others as a strategy to fulfill purpose for myself, balance the scales and keep the demons at bay. About 2 years ago I realized that I could not outrun the critic in my head. That my self loathing and self judgment was controlling my behavior and crafting a life I resented. This left me feeling chronically disappointed, heartbroken, financially broke and depressed. I had been in a lengthy toxic relationship that mimicked early childhood feelings of inadequacy, and shame. My professional life had deteriorated into sea of hopelessness. I found myself in a what a burger parking lot with a weapon desperately trying to resist the desire to end my life. I survived that intense experience and was able to regain mental clarity for a moment which led me to go back to my apartment and dissolve the relationship, leave everything material behind and start over on a friends couch. The alchemy of early childhood trauma and pain along with my self destructive behavior and lack of effective tools had transformed me into a victim and left me stranded alone and isolated. The loneliness and despair became the catalyst for my ability to transform the victim mentality and hopelessness into a healthy and trustworthy relationship with myself. It started with pain and quickly moved into daily habits. Primarily constant vigilance and effective combat against a seeming endless assault of intrusive thoughts and self destructive core beliefs. I used over ear headphones and subconscious affirmations for hours before bed and upon awakening. I engaged in a coaching program called the enlifted method to renegotiate the stories I have about myself. I shed what felt like gallons of tears that contained grief for a life i missed out on as well as joy for a new beginning. I got busy helping others but this time I kept the priority on myself. Making sure I was speaking to myself with fairness and compassion. I took full responsibility for my truth which was nobody is coming. It has to be me if I am going to survive. I let go of the past and focused on today. I went to therapy, I had help from friends and I pursued my ultimate dream of creating e-motion full time. For the first time I went all in on me. I stopped hiding in the shadows behind the alibi that “it is not the right time” that was just an easy way for me to avoid facing the truth that for my entire life I had not felt worthy. I make promises to myself and I keep them. That was the very first thing I did on the road back. No clothes on the floor was the very first promise I made to myself. So many others followed after that and continue today.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For the last 15 years I have been developing a model of therapy that includes traditional evidence-based psychotherapy that also integrates our evolutionary history, neuroscience, and psychological approaches. The framework is designed to capitalize on the brain’s developmental history, survival functions, and the process by which humans learn. Our model focuses on intentional and effective protocols to encourage the natural processes of the brain, and the method optimizes overall mental health and prepares people to handle real-world stress without losing control. I created e-motion wellness an intensive outpatient center that serves primary mental health and Substance use disorder patients. We incorporate an experiential fitness model that I created to support human connection, problem solving, communication and overall well=being. We do not focus on the problem we focus on the system and how to optimize it.
At e-motion wellness™ our mission is to revolutionize the approach to mental health by fostering innovation, empowering individuals to create a radically new narrative, and guiding them towards discovering their inherent worth and strength. We envision a future where mental health is destigmatized, and individuals are empowered to embrace their authenticity and reclaim their lives. We are dedicated to challenging traditional norms, pioneering new approaches, and guiding our clients towards a renewed sense of purpose, fulfillment, and well-being.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My experience was key to my success regarding developing a successful model and getting out to the public. I had done so many sets and reps when it comes to direct client care and had run so many groups with the targeted population that I had more information about how to best serve clients than I could have ever read about or discovered in research.
My commitment to understanding current brain science
My own transformed pain and mistakes had been an incredible asset.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
All the people who said it couldn’t be done or tried to keep it from happening.
