We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Javier Rhoden. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Javier below.
Hi Javier, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from living authentically regardless of the perception of others. This is a double-edged sword because I’ve broken boundaries in terms of respect, both purposely and unintently, yet, disrespect isn’t without reason, it’s just a reason the other party wont accept due to emotions and misunderstanding. Otherwise, with understanding there’s respect and common ground. With resilience, I’ve had to learn to put how I feel and what’s felt to the side because it can be a hinderance by stagnating you. Once the objective is complete, go back to those side emotions and process them so that you can articule what’s felt and why. My resilience comes from introspection and you judge a lot less as you learn more about your own inner strength and the kind of person you can become, and I believe this world can judge less and introspect more.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always wanted to be a writer from when I was younger. I read so many books until I desired to see my own title and name on the cover and spine of a book. The background I come from would have preferred a doctor or lawyer but those weren’t passions of mine. Despite this, I fought my way through self-publishing four poetry books and although it wasn’t supported in the beginning by family, it is now, for what that’s worth. These books serve as an extension from such authenticity from a journey of personal growth, from the beautiful to the nitty-gritty. It has helped in my development to the point of what you see is what you get, and it can have the same effect on those who understand the words and essence put in. My brand Perseveerance are two words in one, perseverance and veer, which means a change in direction. This was started at the height of my chronic pain from severe nerve damage from the neck down; meaning a different path leads to the same destination. My poetry books Luminescence, Lamentations, Altschmerz, Twilight Zone and Panorama can keep you in perseverance as it has kept me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination is foundation, action is key, and consistency is success. Whatever needs improvement will improve naturually as you work, but remember to be clear of your goals and purpose. It’s easy to question the worth in what’s being done but this is dependent on your why. A lot of people function their entire lives without ever questioning why. Figure out why you are doing what you’re doing and the how will come.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
It’s better to invest in areas you aren’t strong in because the level of your operation will be more balanced in terms of improvement on weaknesses, whereas there can be dysfunction despite strengths because of the weaknesses. A well rounded individual is more likely the better performer.
