Meet Javier Tamez

We recently connected with Javier Tamez and have shared our conversation below.

Javier, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Working in the tattoo industry as an artist I feel like designing, painting, and tattooing on a daily basis is how I keep my creativity going. My clients bring new concepts and ideas when they come into their appointments creating new design challenges. This allows me to collaborate with them one on one as they watch me design and create their vision. You never know if you’re going to go into black and gray, color, or both, and type of style.
I also try to paint and draw as much as possible and over the years I’ve also taken many different art classes and tattoo seminars to further my artistic abilities.
I try to do drawing challenges with other artist which is always fun to do,
We pick three words or subjects and see what we come up with just for fun and it kind of keeps yourself sharp. if there is a creative block this a the best way to break it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love every part of what I do for a living! Meeting new people, collaborating, educating, painting, and, tattooing.  In June we will be opening CEDAR HOLLOWS TATTOO with award winning artists located steps away from UTA, in the heart of downtown Arlington on Abram St.  Our studio is a welcoming, friendly, inspiring, clean and professional environment that specializes in creating customized tattoos for each of our clients needs and wantS.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful things in my journey came from moving countries, working at an Art School and Gallery, and learning my trade from Rember Orellana and Francisco Sanchez.

I believe hard work and dedication will always take you closer to your goal. You should continue to work on yourself even when life gets in the way. Be humble and keep meeting people and talking about your goals, you never know who might come across your path that can help you in your journey.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
There has been so many people in my life who I’ve had the pleasure to talk to and learn from that I cant just name one. At the same time, I want to thank every single one of them for being there for me along the way and the many more to come and join the journey.
