Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jawon Merius. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jawon, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my family, immigrants from Haiti who came to America in the 1980s and 1990s. All we’ve ever known is a strong work ethic and being scrappy and resourceful. Since I was a child, I understood that no one owed me anything and that if I wanted anything in this country, I would have to work for it. Being from a working-class family, I saw my mother work multiple jobs to make things happen for my brothers and me. By the time I was 20, I quickly realized that I needed a career and began applying myself to what could yield the highest return on my effort: entrepreneurship. I worked 80 hours per week between 2 jobs and saved as much money as possible while simultaneously starting my first and second business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Jawon Merius. I’m an Enrolled Agent with the authority to represent clients in all 50 states regarding tax matters. I’m a first-generation entrepreneur and the owner of Equity Tax & Accounting. We help business owners and high-earners build and preserve wealth through the US tax code. What’s most exciting about this is the transformation our clients experience after working with us and the relief they experience after realizing this is exactly what they were looking for. My current goal for expansion is to enter into the acquisition and merger space nationwide within the accounting industry. We plan to acquire firms, introduce them to our processes, and expand on what’s already working for us.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, perseverance, and adaptability were the three most impactful qualities in my journey. My advice is to understand that anything worthwhile takes time and that you must keep the end goal in mind. Everyone will have an opinion on what you should do, but the only opinions that matter are from yourself, your mentors, and those who are invested in your growth. Lastly, you will need a certain level of confidence that you can do what you’ve envisioned and must be obsessed about it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I’m looking for partners and collaborators in finance, accounting, private equity, and philanthropy. I’m a strong believer that your network equals your net worth and that these people are forward thinkers and team players and move with urgency. I can be contacted on all social media via @jawonmerius or via email at [email protected].
