We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jay Lawrence. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jay below.
Hi Jay , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
In those rooms I have been able to shine because I have a story to tell and I am just unapologetically myself. That seems to go a long way with the majority in that room cause I have always felt like people can see right thru people that put up a facade to be a certain way to fit in.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a music and sports enthusiast that has a heart as a servant to help educate both end of the spectrum. I created my nonprofit 6 Square Academy as a purpose to educated artist in the music business. The music business has been apart of my whole life and I chose to take it upon my shoulders to help being the support system on the business side because that’s the part that the artist , producers, managers, etc don’t really take time to learn because they look at it as a trial and error path. In some ways it is but there education you have the less error has to be apart of the pathway. A lot of rough patches in this process can cause the creative to fall into a dark path and that leads to Mental Health instabilities, so I have access to a few mental health / life coaches that I partner with to help the creative thru that space.
During this process I started to look and learn to realize that the athletes deal with the same issues as the artist. The NIL ( Name Image and likeness ) age is in effect and the athletes need to be taught the business and structured so they can entertain the aforementioned possibilities.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most important qualities are being consistent ( Helps to show concern ) , effective listening to realize where a person is and being able to communicate on the persons level to help them understand in their language.
The best advice is just to be knowledgeable on how to communicate and figure out what that looks like to people on the outside looking in.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
The biggest challenge I currently face is the marketing aspect because what I have created isn’t being done in the way I am doing it. So it takes a little while for people to understand how valuable my services are until they are in a position where they need me. Since I am a nonprofit , only requirement is for the person that met with me to make a post and encourage others to follow and book meetings.
