We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jayeman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jayeman below.
Hi Jayeman, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
From the difficulties I’ve faced and overcome as well as the teachings I was brought up in
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a rapper from Anderson, Indiana. I recently moved to Tucson, Arizona in the summer of this year. I’ve been making music professionally for about 5 years now. I moved out of my home state with my friend Khaos Kyle. We moved to Tucson due to the music scene here and Arizona as a whole. After putting up my first music event this month, I plan to do more in the foreseeable future with even more giveaways/prizes at the end. I love doing things to help bring people together and help them get their name out there. I want to be the person I wish I had when I was getting started with my music career, so that’s my drive to do what I do. I also have a manga in the works called The Smokey-Verse, based off my alter-ego, Smokey Jaye. Its been a slow and steady process getting the pages together due to the cost of production and everything that goes into it but I’m hoping sometime soon I can generate the funds to fast track the production and have a physical copy out by the middle of next year. As of now, it’s free to read on WebToons. As far as upcoming music projects go, I have two albums in the works. The Jayeman Side B and Smokey’s Gospel are two albums I am currently working on. The release date is to be determined due to a lot of life going on in between production but a rough estimate is I’ll have both released by early spring of next year.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three best skills I would have to say are, resilience, discipline, and clear cut goals. The resilience comes in when you want to quit, life is hard, you don’t think your music or skills are getting you anywhere but something deep inside you won’t quit and continue pushing on day by day. This will give you an edge over anyone who days you can’t because you know you can. The discipline comes in when you’re tired, you don’t want to make that song or do that project and just want to put it off. You have to bring yourself to do it even if you don’t feel like it, maybe take a minute to realize why you love what you do again so it doesn’t feel like a chore. This will give you an edge of laziness and complacency when things start to work out and you start getting recognized for your hard work. Lastly, having clear cut goals will help you to lock in to the next step you need to take without feeling like a fish out of water. However long or short the goal may be, just map it out and work towards it because even small steps add up quickly over time. You could even do monthly goals and if you don’t meet those goals, ask yourself why and what could be done to make it possible. Just be honest with yourself and the goals you know are possible for you to achieve, however that looks. Having this will give you an edge over a lot of people starting in business or music that starting up, don’t have. You will know what you want, how to obtain it, and are willing to do what it takes to do so.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I’m overwhelmed I pause and slow down my racing thoughts by focusing on where I’m at, what’s happening in the present moment and even focusing on my breathing. Think back to the basics, what is it you need? Can you control what’s happening? If not, there’s no amount of anxiety or thinking that will change the outcome. If so, what is it you need to do at the bare minimum? Asking yourself these questions and using these tools should help diffuse feeling overwhelmed. It’s not an easy thing to do but once you practice you’ll find it gets easier.
