We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jazmine Lacour Braid Salon & School Owner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jazmine LaCour, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a three-time award-winning Black beauty professional, licensed cosmetologist, and master braider, I’ve learned that many spaces in the beauty industry—whether it’s with product developers, distributors, or store owners—don’t always reflect people like me. When I’m the only one in the room who looks like me, I remind myself that I bring something truly unique: a deep understanding of my culture, my brand, and my expertise. My talent, 14 certifications, licenses, and experience as the owner of a Houston Braid Salon and Braid School in North Houston give me the confidence and creativity to not just fit in, but to stand out. These experiences allow me to be valuable and make a lasting impact in every space I enter.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a three-time award-winning, six-time award-nominated licensed cosmetologist, and I proudly own a Braid Salon and Braid School in North Houston. One of my greatest passions is sharing knowledge, which is why I regularly host Mom Braid Classes and Kids Braid Classes like the ‘Bomb Braids Boot Camp: Mommy Edition & Teen Edition.’
In my mom classes, I teach mothers how to care for and grow their child’s hair using protective styles and proper hair care techniques. For kids, it’s all about mastering stitch braids, knotless braids, and building their own businesses.
Education is truly where my heart shines. Throughout my journey, I’ve realized that many in the natural hair community lack the essential knowledge for healthy hair growth. As a protective style expert, I believe this understanding is critical for achieving strong, healthy hair during braided styles. To address this, I expanded my mission with the launch of my Cosmetology School, which is now enrolling for our January Braid Program.
And as an educator featured at Bronner Bros: NOLA 2024, I’m excited to continue sharing my expertise on larger platforms. It’s such an honor to help others discover the beauty and potential in natural hair through education, both locally and nationally.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are confidence, creativity, and consistency. Confidence allowed me to walk into rooms and own my space, creativity helped me stand out and bring fresh ideas to the table, and consistency ensured that I kept pushing forward, no matter the obstacles.
For those just starting out, my advice is simple: seize every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t shy away from being different—your uniqueness is your strength. Take risks, because playing it safe won’t get you far. And most importantly, don’t be afraid of hearing ‘no.’ Every rejection is just a stepping stone to your next ‘yes.’ Keep going, stay true to yourself, and never stop believing in your potential.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I am actively seeking collaborations! I’ve recently launched an exciting new product under my line, LaCour Essentials, designed for braiders, hairstylists, lash techs, and barbers. We already have three local distributors on board, and I’m looking to partner with more beauty supply stores and retailers to expand its reach.
I’m also collaborating with individuals who are passionate about education and want to co-host their own mommy or kids’ braid classes with me.
If you’re interested in partnering or collaborating, feel free to reach out through my website or social media channels. Let’s connect and make a lasting impact in the beauty industry together!
