Meet Jazminn Williams

We were lucky to catch up with Jazminn Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jazminn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Before the pandemic in December 2019, I started documenting my foodie experiences on social media. I’ve always enjoyed eating out, but intentionally taking photos, supporting small businesses, and building community quickly became important. My mission turned into an opportunity to amplify Black-owned businesses in New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and now Baltimore/the DMV. When I started photo and video logging, I intended to increase exposure, but my purpose turned into something bigger than that. I get to show young Black boys and girls to authentically be themselves on and offline as well as to create with purpose. I now visit bakeries, restaurants, resorts, local attractions, and more for folks to see what’s beyond their own background. My craft is continualously growing and so is my purpose. I’ve learned purpose isn’t something you find it’s something we choose to lean into.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a digital content creator and foodie. As you can imagine, there is a lot of range with it. I use YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok to post my weekly content. I have fun recording day in the life content and exploring local restaurants with my loved ones. My favorite part about recording content is connecting with business owners. Through natural conversation, I learn about so many stories that make them who they are. Folks are putting out what they love through art and cuisine. It’s a bridge for connection, community, and really good food. The passion I see in this city is so inspirational. Readers can watch the latest videos on my social platforms and check out my website, thedeauxgirl.com for the latest foodie merch.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Authenticity, a positive attitude, and consistency are three qualities I think were and still remain to be the most impactful in my journey. With these ingredients, I remain a confident and self-assured person. In the content creation industry, it’s really easy to get caught up in the numbers or what bigger creators are doing to find success. Instead of copying and pasting what others do, I found it really important to keep putting out content that represents me. No matter how many folks follow me or see it. By remaining positive, I manifest meaningful interactions with people in my surrounding community which is way more important than the number of views on a post. One thing I remind myself of is to continue recording, editing, and posting. My audience will stumble upon me if I’m consistent. My people will find me. That’s the advice I’d give to folks who are early in their journey. Always be yourself and create things that make you smile and proud.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
One challenge I am currently facing is finding a balance between working a full-time job and being a content creator. I wish I could say I have two full-time jobs, but time does not work like that. Sometimes it feels like my creative process is non-existence because my full-time work takes up the majority of my day. I like finding new hacks and tips from content creators/strategists. This allows me to incorporate ideas to stay consistent and engage with my audience. I allow special days, holidays, and seasons to fill me with inspiration – like National Donut Day or fall spooky season.
