We were lucky to catch up with Jazzmin Pitts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jazzmin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a journey of uncovering truths about myself that I didn’t even realize were buried. For years, I struggled with understanding why I kept people at arm’s length or why certain relationships felt harder than they should. It wasn’t until I discovered attachment theory that I began to connect the dots. Learning how my childhood experiences shaped my ability to trust, love, and connect was life-changing—it was like finally finding the missing piece to a puzzle I had been trying to solve my whole life. This understanding gave me a new lens to view my own healing. It sparked something in me, a desire to help other women uncover those same truths and break free from the cycles holding them back. I realized that my pain had a purpose, and now, helping other women heal is how I honor that journey.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I wear many hats as the founder of Healed Black Women (HBW), a nonprofit dedicated to fostering mental health, social-emotional learning, and holistic well-being among Black women. My work centers on building supportive communities that empower women to achieve personal growth and transform themselves and their families. We have workshops every second Saturday of the month.
What’s special about my work is the deep personal connection I bring to it. I’ve walked my own healing journey and understand firsthand the challenges and breakthroughs involved in addressing family wounds and cultivating self-awareness. This fuels my mission to create spaces where others can feel seen, heard, and empowered to heal and thrive.
Currently, I’m expanding my reach in several exciting ways. My latest eBook, Tear for Mom, is a guide for women to better understand their attachment styles and work toward healthier relationships with their mothers. I’ve also launched Mental Stamina Consulting, a platform for speaking engagements and corporate workshops focused on mental health, personal development, and building resilience.
Additionally, I’m preparing to release my upcoming book, Healing Your Hidden Child: From Guarded to Grounded, which explores my personal journey through attachment and healing, offering insights and actionable steps for others to begin their own work. I’m also working on creating a coaching platform to guide individuals in healing family wounds.
Through all these initiatives, I aim to inspire, educate, and uplift others to break through barriers, embrace their true selves, and live with intention. My brand is about healing, transformation, and showing that with the right tools and support, we can rebuild the connections that matter most starting with ourselves.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to build meaningful connections.
Resilience has helped me navigate the challenges life has thrown my way, whether personal or professional. It’s not just about bouncing back but learning to adapt, grow, and keep moving forward despite setbacks. I’ve had many dark days; however, I didn’t allow them to consume me. For anyone early in their journey, resilience starts with reframing challenges as opportunities for growth. Practice self-compassion and remind yourself that progress is more important than perfection.
Self-awareness has been the foundation of my healing and growth. The ability to reflect honestly on my thoughts, emotions, and patterns and understand how they impact my actions has unlocked many levels in my growth. This inner work created the clarity needed to for me to set meaningful goals and achieve them.
Lastly, the ability to build meaningful connections has been transformative. No one achieves their dreams alone, and the relationships I’ve fostered—with mentors, peers, and the community I serve—have given me support, inspiration, and new perspectives. For those starting out, focus on intentional networking. Surround yourself with people who align with your values and are doing the work you aspire to do. Be genuine in your interactions and always look for ways to give, not just receive.
My advice for those just beginning their journey is to embrace the process. Growth isn’t linear, and the lessons learned along the way often hold the most value. Be patient with yourself, lean into discomfort, and trust that every step forward, no matter how small, is bringing you closer to your purpose.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been transitioning from self-sabotage to self-belief. For years, I wrestled with imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and the constant feeling that I wasn’t consistent or “good enough” to truly make an impact. That mindset kept me stuck in cycles of second-guessing myself and holding back from stepping into my full potential.
The shift began when I realized how much power lies in the stories we tell ourselves. I started challenging the narrative of self-sabotage by actively reprogramming my thoughts. Instead of dwelling on what could go wrong, I began to focus on what could go right. I replaced negative self-talk with affirmations and surrounded myself with reminders of my progress and capabilities. Over time, this practice helped me build a foundation of self-belief that has transformed the way I approach challenges, opportunities, and even setbacks.
This shift has been liberating. I’ve embraced bold decisions, launched new projects, and taken up space in rooms I once felt unworthy of entering. Believing in myself has allowed me to step into my purpose unapologetically and to move with confidence in my abilities and vision.
My journey is proof that self-belief is a muscle…it gets stronger the more you use it. For anyone struggling with self-sabotage, I encourage you to start small. Acknowledge your wins, celebrate your progress, and remind yourself daily that you are worthy and capable. It’s not about perfection; it’s about persistence. The moment you start betting on yourself is the moment everything begins to change.
