We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jc Mason. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JC below.
JC, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I grew up feeling like what I was doing wasn’t enough, and most of the people around me only reinforced that. A lot of my drive started out as a negative, honestly. I was overworking myself and pushing myself way past my limits to be seen as worthy, or good enough. It’s only been recently that I’ve started working for me. I work hard because I want to see how well I can do, how good I can be. I know that if I do my absolute best on every project, I’ll only continue to see growth, and eventually, the right people will see that too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Photography isn’t always regarded as an impressive art form, but it’s still very much art. Being able to take a second of time and capture it, have it forever? Or turn it into something new, or show people how beautiful just one second can be? Honestly, it’s amazing. I love what I do. I love going back and looking at past shoots, seeing the people that let me in to experience those moments with them. As a small business photographer, I feel like I’m able to connect with my community in such a cool way. I’ve seen people fall in love, watched people realize they’re making a difference, watched new businesses start and grow, and so much more. I don’t just love my job because it’s fun. I love my job because it’s my way of connecting.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most impactful qualities or skills for me were how bubbly and excited I am, my drive, and my love for the arts.
Honestly, the bubbly excited personality isn’t always on, it’s not always necessary, and it’s not *always* helpful. It’s great to have when you’ve got a shy teenager in front of your camera for a graduation shoot and you can make them laugh and come out of their shell by being goofy, and I was lucky that I was born running and laughing. But it’s all about being you. Be goofy, be silly, be happy, any time it feels like you need that smile.
Drive is a bit harder to give advice on, for me. Some days, I still feel like it’s not the easiest thing to have. The best advice I’ve got is to avoid burnout. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Even if you think someone will be mad, or you want something done sooner rather than later. Always give yourself that time.
A love for the arts is honestly something I think you have or you don’t. I think everyone will find some form of art that they love. Whether it’s music, painting, writing, photography, you just have to look and you’ll find it.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I recently moved to this state, so I’ve been having issues finding clients. It’s been pretty hard to get my name out, and find people who find value in what I do, but that’s all a part of the process. I’ve been doing ‘pay what you can’ shoots, free shoots, posting to my instagram, and put a website up. From there, it’s all about making sure you do your absolute best.
