We recently connected with Jc Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.
JC, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
The two key aspects that help any cancer survivor live longer is resilience and hope.
But, for me, when I watch the resilience of the clients I work with, it inspires me to learn more, create more, and care more.
There is a heavy weight on your shoulders when there is a life to impact on the other side of a social media post or on the other end of an email.
Creating content that helps improve survival and reduce risk of cancer and even lower cancer death rate is content that needs to be known and shared to the world.
There are 18.1 million lives to impact in the USA alone and 48 million lives world wide affected by this terrible disease.
Yet, what I have to offer could help reduce 50% of cancer cases and 50% of cancer deaths. We know that exercise, nutrition, and quality sleep reduces cancer risk, but the public deserves to know what to avoid, how to exercise, and what to eat.
Lives are at stake, and every day that I can help someone improve their health or help a cancer survivor exercise through cancer is another day I can wake up knowing I made a difference in one more life.
The clients I work with and the people who follow my content will always motivate me to keep moving forward.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a cancer exercise specialist, I realized quickly in the medical world that there are limited resources for cancer survivors when it comes to exercise and fitness. I created OncoloFit to be that space for cancer survivors to learn about their cancer and how to exercise to empower them to overcome it. OncoloFit is the only online coaching practice for cancer survivors. The name “OncoloFit” comes from the core of what we do–Oncology and Fitness. The OncoloFit program focuses on building a healthy and fit lifestyle for cancer survivors.
Cancer affects survivors mentally, physically, and emotionally, so my priority is comprehensive care.
Currently, the 3 biggest ways to increase survival, reduce risk of cancer, and improve quality of life is
1) Building Muscle Mass
2) Gaining Cardio Strength
3) Maintaining a Healthy Weight
Right now, over 80% of Americans are overweight or obese, carrying too much fat and not enough muscle.
But while cancer eats away at your muscle, cancer treatment helps put on the fat.
Being under-muscled and carrying too much fat increases your risk of 13+ different cancer types.
The best tool we have to fight cancer (alongside conventional treatment) is through exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
All three will help build a cancer-fighting body and reduce overall cancer risk.
Most cancer survivors gain an extreme amount of fat and weigh their heaviest after cancer. Therefore, I created a free fat-loss guide (available to anyone) that dives into:
– what foods to eat
– how to properly lose fat
– how to know if you are carrying too much fat
– the best fat loss exercises
– and how to build muscle
I’ve helped 1,000’s of cancer survivors lose over 40 lb’s of fat, and the culprits are always the same:
1) steroids
2) low estrogen/testosterone
3) poor sleep
4) anxious eating
5) not enough movement
The regular “fat-loss” tricks don’t work, and after being a part of various exercise and nutrition studies, I’ve learned the keys to fighting cancer is to lose fat and build muscle.
But the best part is that it is all for FREE on my website at OncoloFit.com Health & Fitness for Survivors
Every online coaching client we work with has a weekly check-in that reviews sleep, stress, pain, and routine to ensure all aspects of life are healthy.
Survivors are also given full access to me, a cancer exercise specialist, at any time for any oncology, health, and fitness questions they may have.
My job is to help motivate survivors, hold them accountable, and ensure they never feel like they are going through their cancer journey alone.
Our desire is to make exercise and healthy living a part of life – not someone’s whole life. We design a plan that helps survivors meet their goals in the lifestyle that they have. In other words, we work to fit exercise into their routine and set up their environment for success.
We create the workout plan and review medications, treatment schedules, goals, and body types to help survivors feel comfortable and safe as they exercise.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me it’s the online coaching clients that I work with that help me move forward. After working with thousands of cancer survivors, I’ve learned that the 3 thing needed for success–for myself and my clients–are consistency, kindness, and honesty.
1) I make sure to be consistent to show up every day and provide clients, followers, and survivors with valuable content that actually helps them feel better, improve their health, and reduce cancer risk. My goal is to provide consistent content for those who follow my work on instagram and that with every post they are able to learn something new, feel encouraged, and know what their next steps should be. And when I’m consistent, my clients are encouraged to be as well.
2) Kindness. Cancer survivors have already gone through a lot. You don’t need someone else to try and sell you something you don’t need, bring more anxiety to your day to day, or diminish your experience. Therefore, every message I say is meant to be said with kindness and empathy, because while I know the science, the way I relay the message of health is also really important. Cancer is a tough disease, and medically, it can be treated in a cold manner, which can dismiss the person suffering inside.
3) Honesty. Sadly, the health and fitness industry is filled with quick fixes, snake oil tricks, false information and sales tactics. And this becomes specifically true for cancer survivors. After cancer, they are bombarded with scam-filled, “cancer-cure” tactics, which in my business, I have decided to avoid and be honest. I am honest about the research and provide an evidence-based approach that is not bullet proof, but it is effective
That is why my goal is to shine light by providing cancer survivors a safe space to gain health and fitness information in a way that does not dismiss their struggles but rather embraces it so that there are no barriers left that they can’t overcome.
It’s the resilience, hope, and faith that cancer survivors have through their journey is what gets me out of bed in the morning.
I know that I have to show up every day for someone because they are counting on me to help them in their health and wellbeing.
I have to provide content that will motivate, encourage, or help someone today. A lot of my work is based on providing FREE information that can be help anyone in their cancer journey.
I have taken time to study all the barriers and challenges that cancer survivors have. I have studied the aspects of health the healthcare systems, and from that I have created 3 free guides to help cancer survivors succeed and overcome cancer.
1) How to Overcome Cancer Fatigue
2) Nutrition Guide After Cancer
3) 101 Cancer Fighting Work Out Guide
I want survivors to have access to the information they NEED and not be distracted by things they don’t.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I created OncoloFit because while working in the hospital I learned rather quickly that cancer survivors do not have a save, evidence based space to get their health and fitness information.
