Meet Jean Carlos Falcon

We recently connected with Jean Carlos Falcon and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jean Carlos with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I’ve been working my whole life. As an immigrant and a child of immigrants, I spent the majority of my childhood working at my family’s grocery store. After school, weekends, you name it. It made me understand that you need hard work to go places, especially when you start out with no connections.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a cinematographer, I started as a production assistant in the tv/film industry, worked my way into the lighting department and in the recent years I’ve transitioned to being a cinematographer. Working with a crew and cast to create a video project has always been fun to me. The conversations that you get to have behind the camera and the process of building onto each element of cinematography as you make something is fun, you get to see something that you saw in your head come to life right before your eyes. That is a great feeling, it makes sense why so many people want to be cinematographers.

I like to specialize in commercials and documentaries. I like commercials because you get the most control over the image, whether it’s filming in a studio or having enough crew to make a large lighting plot. I like documentaries because you don’t have control over a lot, so you get to think quickly on your feet and react to your environment. They’re both rewarding in their own regards.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think the 3 qualities that have been most impactful in my journey have been my work ethic, my thirst for wanting to keep learning and improving, and also my love for creating. If you’re in the business of cinematography, I think it’s important to know that you’re going to have ups, you’re definitely going to have downs, but as long as you keep pushing yourself, keep finding the fun in it, and understand that it is a long long long journey, you’ll do great.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m constantly doing my best to connect with people, whether it’s producers, directors, artists, etc. I love to create and work with people, so if there is a documentary idea out there or a commercial for a brand that you’ve been wanting to make, I’d love to chat with you! I welcome everybody.
