How I Built My Confidence and Self-Esteem Over the Years
Confidence and self-esteem didn’t come to me overnight. They’ve grown with me over the years, shaped by my experiences, ambitions, and the goals I’ve worked hard to achieve.
From a young age, I was full of dreams and ambition. I grew up in a family where my father owned several businesses, and being around that environment gave me an early sense of responsibility and motivation. I always knew I wanted to achieve something on my own.
One of my biggest goals was to finish college and earn my degree in Business Management — and I did it. That was the first big dream I accomplished, and it gave me the confidence to know I could set a goal and make it happen.
After college, I began working in my field. Later on, I met my husband, we got married, started a family, and I became deeply involved in his businesses. We’ve worked side-by-side for over 30 successful years, building and managing different ventures together.
But even while I supported our family and our shared businesses, I always held on to another dream — to build something of my own.
That dream was to create a floral business. I’ve always loved flowers, design, and decoration. Working with flowers brings me peace and joy — it relaxes me and truly makes me happy. Building my own floral business wasn’t just about entrepreneurship; it was about doing something I genuinely love.
Through each chapter of my life — from school, to marriage, to motherhood, to business — I’ve learned to trust myself more, believe in my abilities, and stay connected to what makes me feel alive. Confidence, for me, has come from showing up for my dreams again and again, even when it was hard or uncertain.
And today, I continue to grow — as a woman, a wife, a mother, and a business owner — knowing that my self-worth comes from within and is powered by purpose, love, and passion.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
About Me
Hi, I’m Jean — a wife, a proud mom of three incredible and successful sons, and the founder and floral designer behind Rose and Thorn Florist in Scottsdale, Arizona.
My love for floral design began long before I became a wife and mother. Flowers have always brought me joy, inspiration, and a deep sense of purpose. Still, life took me in a different direction for a time. I spent 30 years working alongside my husband in our family businesses. Then, like so many others, the pandemic forced us to make the difficult decision to close those businesses.
But that wasn’t the end of my story — it was a new beginning.
I made a bold decision: there are no limits. I wasn’t going to wait for the next chapter — I was going to create it. And that’s when I returned to my first love: floral design.
At Rose and Thorn Florist, I bring elegance, emotion, and artistry to every arrangement. Whether it’s a wedding, a celebration of life, a special event, or a simple bouquet that says “I’m thinking of you,” I pour my heart into every stem and bloom. Especially when I get to create something with my own hands — guided by vision, creativity, and faith.
I specialize in:
Luxury floral arrangements for weddings and special events
Elegant funeral and celebration of life tributes
Custom designs for any occasion
Above all, I’m a believer. I trust that God places things in our path for a reason — and that He always gives us the strength to begin again, to dream again, and to bloom again.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The Three Pillars That Shaped My Journey: Resilience, Integrity, and Grace
Resilience, integrity, and grace have been the core pillars that carried me through one of the most transformative chapters of my life. After we were forced to close our business due to the pandemic, it felt like life had hit pause. But deep down, I knew: this was not the end.
I told myself, “I’m not done dreaming.” I asked, “Can I build something new?” That question sparked something inside me—a renewed passion. I returned to floral design with fresh eyes and a stronger spirit. I dove deeper into the industry, determined to grow, to learn, and to prepare for the next chapter.
Resilience played a major role in my journey. Those early steps back into design were anything but easy. From going back to school, to researching established businesses, to questioning whether I wanted to take on that responsibility again—I hit more than a few roadblocks. But each time I fell, I stood back up, dusted myself off, and kept going. I refused to let rejection or failure define me. Resilience, for me, wasn’t just about bouncing back; it was about pushing forward, especially when it was hard.
Integrity has guided every choice I’ve made. From the beginning, my mission has been to create floral designs that are not only beautiful, but meaningful—tailored to each home, each client, each occasion. I wanted my work to feel personal and special, not just pretty.
And finally, grace—a quality I’ve carried throughout my life and especially in how I treat others. I believe in being kind, in respecting people, and in leading with empathy, no matter the situation.
These three values—resilience, integrity, and grace—haven’t just helped me survive. They’ve helped me grow, rebuild, and reimagine what’s possible. And I know they’ll continue to guide me through whatever comes next.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
If I knew I only had a decade left to live, I would spend it fully leaning into what matters most—my family.
Time with my three boys and my husband would become even more sacred. I’d carry with me a constant reminder that time is precious, and that love and forgiveness are everything. I’d make space for the things I love to do, without guilt or hesitation.
I would keep running my business—I’d never stop. My work gives me purpose, and I believe in showing up for what I’ve built and what I believe in.
Above all, I’d focus on making peace with every season that comes, and with every person I love. I want to walk through those years with open hands and a clear heart.
I’d never stop moving—fitness and exercise keep me strong, physically and mentally. They’re part of how I stay healthy, so I can be present and active for my grandkids when that time .
