We were lucky to catch up with Jeana Acosta recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeana, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
One of biggest way I am able to continue to persist is knowing I am being authentic and giving my best, while keeping my head down and not acknowledging what other people say or think about me. I do not engage in negativity or gossip about myself or others. I keep in mind their behavior is a reflection of them and not me.
This does not mean that I do not acknowledge or address issues that arise. I do my best to resolve all issues and take accountability when I am in the wrong. I also have mentors I can reach out to who help me navigate situations I don’t know how to handle.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I teach about cannabis and how it works in the body. I am able to offer CME’s to healthcare professionals and Cannacian certification through the ECS Therapy Center for anyone interested in getting involved in the cannabis industry or professionals who have clients or patients who use cannabis. I also work with medical patients to help them navigate cannabis therapy.
In 2019 I started {dope} Women + Weed. An organization whose mission is to break the stigma surrounding cannabis and other plant medicine through education and networking.
We offer an array of services including events, advocacy for women and marginalized communities surrounding cannabis, cannabis doctor recommendations, cannabis medical/business consulting, etc. {dope} Women + Weed has grown tremendously over the years and is recognized both nationally and internationally.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I feel like the three things that really helped make an impact on moving my organization forward is the background I have in healthcare marketing/design, the knowledge I obtained about cannabis and other plant medicine, and aligning myself with mentors and people in the community who know more than I do when it comes to leadership and problem-solving.
For those looking to start a business or organization, I recommend having a marketing strategy and plan.
You could have the best product or service in the industry but if people don’t know about it, they can’t use your product or service. Having quality marketing material and strategies for your business helps set your business up for success.
Be an expert in your field. The more knowledge you have, the more you’re able to help serve your client/customer base.
Ask for help. The best thing you can do for yourself is to reach out for help from people who are more experienced than you in the areas you’re looking to improve or grow into.
This could seem scary or intimidated if you do not know the people you’re reaching out to personally, but keep in mind most people would absolutely love to help if they have the capacity. If someone is unwilling or unable to help, don’t take it personal and look for the next person you could ask. Remember, The more people you have on your team to help you succeed the further you’ll go.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I highly recommend collaborations with individuals and brands who align with your mission. Collaboration can help with growing your organization or business by reaching your collaborative partners audience.
We are always looking to collaborate with individuals interested in cannabis education, as well as those looking to grow their network.
