We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeanette Woods a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanette, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Empathy is huge in my work. As a user experience design professional, I have been able to learn how to cultivate empathy for the people I create products for. Also, in my professional and personal experience, I have overcome quite a bit of adversity, which has led me to better empathize with others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are committed to partnering with socially and environmentally conscious enterprises, helping them translate their values into compelling visual identities, products, and experiences. Our main offering is a comprehensive evaluation of your product, or site design. Where we create an actionable list of opportunities and areas of improvement, ranked from low to greatest impact. We also offer workshops, trainings and full site/product design. Our mission is to leverage design as a force for good, fostering innovation, sustainability, and equitable growth in the business landscape. We have committed to this stance because we have seen the value of our work and know how impactful it can be, and we want to make sure that we are using these skills to help those who are helping to make the world a better place.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the most impactful parts of my journey was my corporate experience, it really shaped the way I navigate my professional life. I learned very valuable skills, but I also learned how to create the environment that I needed to thrive and show up in the best way for my clients. My advice for folks early in their career would be to niche down and figure out what specific audience they want to cater to, whether that is in the context of a job or as a business owner. It seems counter intuitive to niche down, so many are hesitant to do that, and if that is you, just remember, if you are targeting everyone, you are really speaking to no one.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
We work with socially conscious businesses, non-profits and B-Corps who are looking to improve or build out their wesbite and app designs and increase their conversion rates and engagement. We also work with companies and organizations that are looking to create team building via design thinking and foster a better understanding of ux design.
