We recently connected with Jeanne Akita and have shared our conversation below.
Jeanne, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
In my pursuit of fostering creativity, I actively seek out new experiences, ideas, and perspectives. Whether immersing myself in diverse books, travel, or engaging in activities beyond my usual routine, the goal is to expand my horizons. I maintain a constant curiosity, consistently asking questions and remaining open to learning about different subjects across various fields of knowledge. To fuel creative thinking, I set challenges and goals that push the boundaries of my art abilities, tackling complex problems, or taking on new projects. Sometimes, the collaboration becomes a cornerstone, as I work with others to exchange ideas and viewpoints, understanding that diverse input often leads to unique solutions. I embrace experimentation, fearlessly trying new things and taking risks, recognizing that breakthroughs and novel ideas often stem from stepping outside comfort zones. As I observe the world around me, paying attention to details in my surroundings, I draw inspiration from everyday experiences.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Jeanne Akita, a dedicated fiber artist specializing in the creation of both decorative and functional fiber art through ancient felting techniques. My artistic journey seamlessly weaves together my profound appreciation for the intricate beauty of nature, my foundation in classical arts such as oil painting and drawing, and my fervor for sculptural fiber art. Each piece I craft is a unique creation, meticulously formed through the exclusive use of hand agitation, soap, water, and thoughtfully selected sustainable loose fibers. Drawing from local farms, my materials include sheep wool, silk cocoons, flax, and raw lamb’s fleece. I build rich textures and patterns by layering and shaping these diverse fibers, each possessing its distinct qualities. Following felting, I employ the shibori dye method with non-toxic or plant-based dyes and add final touches through hand-painting with a brush. My primary artistic intention is to encapsulate micro details and textures while maintaining a commitment to sustainability, evident in both materials and techniques. Fiber felting, for me, is a harmonious convergence of fine art and craft, blending elements of sculpture and painting with functional art. This synthesis allows me to explore boundless possibilities, transforming even the most imaginative ideas into tangible creations that reflect my profound admiration for the beauty of nature and a dedication to preserving it through sustainable artistry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I constantly remind myself that personal and professional growth is a continuous process. Patience with oneself, celebrating small victories, and viewing challenges as steppingstones toward improvement have become my mantras. Seeking mentorship and guidance from experienced individuals in my field and proactively building a network of like-minded individuals have further enriched my journey. Consistency, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to learning have been key contributors to both my current successes and long-term aspirations.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months, my artistic journey has undergone a transformative shift from wearable fiber art to a focus on creating captivating decorative pieces. This evolution has been a conscious exploration of new avenues within the realm of fiber artistry. While wearable pieces allowed me to intimately connect art with the body, the transition to decorative works has afforded me the freedom to delve into larger, more intricate designs that capture the essence of my creative vision on a broader scale. This shift has opened up a canvas of possibilities, enabling me to experiment with diverse textures, patterns, and techniques that go beyond the constraints of wearable art. Embracing this change has not only expanded the scope of my artistic expression but has also allowed me to create pieces that invite viewers to engage with the beauty of fiber art in unique and unconventional ways. This journey marks a period of exploration and growth, as I continue to push the boundaries of my craft and discover the limitless potential that decorative fiber art holds.
