We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeehye Shin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeehye, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is rooted in the solitary moments I spend at home. Embracing solitude has allowed me to introspect, understand my strengths, and develop a profound sense of self-reliance. Through this personal time, I’ve encountered challenges head-on, honed my coping mechanisms, and cultivated resilience in the face of adversity. The ability to navigate life independently within the familiar confines of my home has been instrumental in shaping my inner strength and fortitude. It is in these quiet moments that I discover the resilience born from self-reflection and self-discovery.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a tattoo artist, my expertise lies in crafting customized designs that encapsulate the unique stories and experiences shared by my clients. By actively listening to their narratives, I am able to translate emotions, memories, and personal symbols into meaningful and bespoke tattoo art. This personalized approach not only ensures that each design is a reflection of the individual’s journey but also creates a lasting and deeply meaningful connection between the artwork and its wearer. It is the art of storytelling through ink, where my skills as a tattoo artist converge with the narratives of those seeking to etch their stories onto their skin.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful aspects of my journey as a tattoo artist are rooted in a trifecta of drawing skill, a unique perspective on objects, and a genuine passion for the art of tattooing. My honed drawing abilities serve as the foundation, allowing me to bring intricate and visually stunning designs to life on skin. A distinctive point of view towards objects enables me to reimagine and transform ordinary elements into extraordinary, personalized tattoos. Yet, perhaps the most significant influence is my profound affection for the art of tattooing itself — an unwavering passion that infuses each creation with enthusiasm and dedication. Together, these elements form the core of my artistic journey, shaping not only my craft but also the meaningful connections forged through the stories told on the canvas of human skin.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My primary obstacle as an artist has consistently been myself. The challenges I face often stem from internal sources, including self-doubt, perfectionism, and the constant pursuit of surpassing my own creative standards. Overcoming these barriers requires introspection, a reassessment of my artistic boundaries, and the cultivation of a positive mindset. Acknowledging that I am my own harshest critic, I strive to turn self-imposed obstacles into opportunities for growth. Ultimately, navigating the intricate landscape of artistic expression involves overcoming the inner hurdles that, at times, hinder the realization of my full creative potential.
