We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeff Bartel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeff below.
Hi Jeff, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For me, purpose was never a lightning bolt moment—it was something that revealed itself gradually, through seasons of work, service, and reflection. In my earliest roles, I discovered how deeply people’s lives are shaped by decisions made in rooms most never see. That insight made me realize that leadership is not about position, but about responsibility.
Over time, I came to understand that my purpose was not tied to one title, company, or sector. Whether in business, law, education, or community service, the common thread was clear: I am at my best when I help others build, grow, and flourish. Purpose, for me, is about creating value that endures, and about leaving people, organizations, and communities stronger than I found them.
Teaching and mentoring have reinforced that truth. When I see someone discover their own potential, it reminds me that purpose is not just about pursuing one’s own path, but about opening pathways for others. My purpose is stewardship—using the time, talents, and opportunities I’ve been given to advance the common good and to empower the next generation of leaders.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At its heart, my work is about investing in people and ideas that can make a lasting difference. Through the firm I founded, I’ve had the privilege of helping to build and support businesses across many fields—from technology and real estate to finance and social ventures. What excites me most is not simply the success of a deal or a project, but the ripple effects: the jobs created, the communities strengthened, the innovations that move us closer to a more sustainable and equitable future.
In addition to business, I’ve always been deeply engaged in teaching and mentoring. Working with students and young entrepreneurs has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. Seeing someone develop the confidence to pursue their vision—and knowing I’ve helped them take one step closer—reminds me why I do what I do.
What I hope people take away about my work is that it is guided by values. I believe business should not only generate returns but also serve a broader purpose—building trust, advancing integrity, and leaving institutions and communities stronger than they were before. That philosophy shapes everything I do, whether it’s investing in a new venture, advising leaders, or standing in front of a classroom.
Looking ahead, I’m focused on expanding this work at the intersection of entrepreneurship, education, and impact. That includes continuing to teach and mentor the next generation of leaders, deepening investments in ventures that align profit with purpose, and contributing to initiatives that strengthen civic life. For me, that blend of business, service, and education is not just a career—it’s a calling.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I reflect on my journey, three qualities stand out above all others.
First is curiosity. The willingness to keep asking questions, to listen carefully, and to see the world as unfinished has shaped nearly every step of my path. Curiosity keeps you adaptable and open, and it turns challenges into opportunities to learn. For those early in their journey, cultivate a habit of listening more than speaking and reading more broadly than required. The world has a way of rewarding those who stay curious.
Second is resilience. Life and work will test you—sometimes in ways you cannot anticipate. I have found that setbacks often carry the seeds of growth if we meet them with patience and resolve. Early in my career, unexpected turns forced me to stretch in directions I had not planned. With time, those experiences proved invaluable. My advice: do not fear detours; embrace them. They may end up being the most formative chapters of your story.
Third is integrity. Skills and knowledge can open doors, but trust and character keep them open. Integrity means more than avoiding shortcuts; it means anchoring your decisions in values, even when the easier path beckons. To those beginning their careers, I would say: protect your reputation as carefully as your résumé. Both will follow you, but only one defines who you are when no one is watching.
If you nurture curiosity, resilience, and integrity, you’ll find that opportunities are less about chance and more about the person you’ve become along the way.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I knew I had only a decade left, I would take what I already value most—time with my family and children—and deepen it even further. Our lives are already full of shared dinners, conversations, and adventures, but I would carve out even more space for those moments. With my daughter in college and my son in high school, I would want to travel with them to places that inspire, return to the places that hold our stories, and create new traditions they could carry with them for a lifetime.
I would continue to mentor and support them as they pursue their own paths, not by directing their choices but by being fully present—listening to their hopes, celebrating their milestones, and encouraging them to see the fullest version of themselves. And I would savor the simple, everyday joys that already sustain us: laughter, music, time outdoors, and quiet evenings together.
In truth, I would not need to change the way I live, only to deepen it, because the legacy I most want to leave is already being written in the love, memory, and shared purpose of our family.
