We recently connected with Jeff Carroll and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeff, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I was little growing up and I’m only 5’7″ now, but I had to learn to be creative with the things I said and people needed to understand me. I believe I had a natural gift of getting my message across. Of course that had to be developed. Long before I decided to write fiction and entertain people with my written stories I told stories orally to my friends. We didn’t have a storytime or anything formal. We just told stories about our weekend or our vacations and trips. I lived in New Jersey, but I hung out in New York with my cousins. In NYC I did things that my friends in New Jersey dreamed of. Most often I told stories of going to the movies on 42nd Street. I remember telling the stories of the Kung Fu and B movies we saw. I would embellish these retellings and make them exciting. I still use that technique to this day. Before I write a story or an outline to a story that I think of I tell it to people. I may not tell them the entire story. Sometimes I tell the beginning of the story or just the premise, but I make sure I get some feedback on my new ideas before I write them up.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well, I am always working on film in a sense because I am always pitching scripts, but I have a few comic book projects that I working on that are exciting. First, is the fourth book in my Planet Alkebulan series. This is the last Planet Alkebulan book and this book will include a RPG character guide for all of the main characters in the series. I am also working on the third, fourth and fifth books in my FangerNails series. I am also writing some humorous stories for a collection of stories that will make you laugh.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Growing up there was a radio host who used to close his show by saying “Persistence overcomes resistance every time.” If there is one thing that I feel has been helpful to me is accepting that you have to stay aggressive in this industry. As an indy artist there’s no one to push you. You set your own pace so, you have to keep an aggressive pace. Sometimes its not easy for me because there are no guarantees, but when I feel like I’m about to slack off I think of that radio DJ’s words. People always ask me what keeps me going and that’s it. I believe that success is a game of survival.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I often feel overwhelmed. When I get this feeling I slow down and back off any of my projects and meditate. I think of how many things I am working on and reset them. Organizing is my key. Creating a project list allows me to push things back when there is a hiccup.
