Meet Jeffrey Moeller

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeffrey Moeller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeffrey below.

Hi Jeffrey, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I think I was building up my resilience since I was very young. Being born with eczema will do that. I had to get through my skin issues, both physically and mentally amongst my peers. I hid it pretty well, but not always. Anxiety creeps in and life moments get difficult. Inhibiting my joy and zest for life. I believe it had a lot to do with my shyness as well. My resiliency kept my head above water no matter how extraordinary or difficult a situation was physically emotionally and mentally.

Resilience played a huge part getting my body and mind right, even when all seemed lost. Most of all, it led to me to getting started in music producing. Deep down in my heart and soul this was my calling. However it shakes out I know I finally tried what I’ve always wanted to do. Without my resilience to keep me in steady in the choppy seas of life, I would not have had the opportunity to even get started in music producing. You just can’t count on resiliency and think everything will work out. You have to use it as a tool and it always needs sharpening.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I grew up with music in my household. It was vinyl on the turntable playing oldies, pop, punk, rock, doo wop and of course r&b. Musicals included. My overall family had no serious musicians or people working in the music industry. I had no one to ask questions to or give advice when I really started to get interested in music in my teens. Without any real guidance, I never got anything going or knew a path I could take to get started. Partly was due to the fact I was heavily involved in team sports, plus other variables that were prohibitive for my music ambitions. During college, I was writing poetry that in turn pushed me into writing hip-hop lyrics. I loved rhyming and grew up a big listener of rap and hip-hop. I didn’t want to rap or perform, just ghostwrite if I was given the opportunity. I knew this was going to be very hard to come by. There were a few prospects, but nothing much materialized. I made a right turn and worked in TV/film production while creating and writing stories and scripts. I was getting close to my goal of selling at least one written piece, but the 2006 writer’s strike and then the economy tanking, gravely deflated my opportunites. I left the entertainment business but always kept my toes in the water because I’m a creative at heart and could never fully leave. After getting through some tumultuous years in regards to my health and eczema issues I had a creative bubble inside ready to burst.

It was only two plus years ago I finally had the some time and mental space to start producing music.
My wife and I were fortunate enough to make a big move to live close walking distance to the beach in L.A. I’m a water and beach person, so getting to hear the waves and the watch these glorious sunsets gave me bursts of inspiration that I could not deny, especially for my well-being. I found a platform I could produce music on and I self-taught myself to make beats and musical tracks and even scoring short videos. I even helped my wife with a few of her projects.

I released an EP on Spotify and Apple under my producer name Sunshot titled Golden Hour. I have a second EP that will be released around the end of August of 2024. I tended to be shy about my creative work, but producing music has really broke me out of that shell. I’m pumped up about my upcoming EP titled Night Drive. It will show my more fun and experimental side of genre bending electronic music mixed with r&b and a dash of hip-hop.

But my real focus is music placement and scoring short form media. But I always welcome any artist that wants to use any of my music or re-mix it.

My EP’s showcase a bit of what I can do. Plus I needed to prove to myself I can finish a project and have it distributed. I love the connection that can build from anywhere on the planet, including family and friends, by getting to express creativity through music. BUt late then never right?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

One particular quality was the healing aspect for my eczema while I was working away on my music tracks. I don’t think it was surprise that something I love and and get into a special flow is very healing. I believe that in whatever you love doing, not only feels good in the mind, but heals what is ailing you physically. I’m not saying a cure, but in that moment, on that time, you feel right.

One of my skills is understanding tone and mood from music and how it fits in to and particular setting. Whether for studying, a creepy visual, or in a happy bouncy place, I really feel how the sounds are put together and the emotion or mood it is setting and its progression. This skill is what has always wanted me to make music, I didn’t know how to articulate that skill years back. But it was there. Now, if I can’t articulate a skill I just show it and then we can talk.

The knowledge of how the music industry, in all its forms, operates and where the opportunities lie. I understand the limitations as I navigate through an ever changing industry. Whatever type of career or journey you’re on, learn and understand the fundamentals of that business or industry. Keep learning and and be you, it’s a lot more fun.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with other music producers, musicians, vocalists and people looking for music for videos or podcasts. I’m new, but hungry, love to learn and work with other talented people. I can check me out at @sunshotvibe on Instagram
