Meet Jeji Aviel

We recently connected with Jeji Aviel and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeji , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

I developed my ability to communicate effectively by empathizing with others and having an unbiased viewpoint. I try to put myself in other shoes by having empathy and taking on that persons emotions. It is easy to talk at people and to talk with the intent to respond. Rarely do we sit and analyze what could have led this person to say these words at this very moment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I was born in Detroit Michigan. I spent my childhood being split between my mother who lived in Detroit, and my father who lives in New York. Going back and forth between parents and environments had its ups and downs. I found my happiness by creating. My creations took on many forms. I wrote music, poetry and also designed clothes. Being exposed to different cultures made me want to learn more about what makes a person unique. Story telling in all forms became a safe space for me. I told stories through music, poetry and short stories. This is why I decided to pursue journalism. Journalism is a vehicle for me to explore all four corners of the earth and the unique people who dwell here. I am able to connect with different people on a personal level, and hear their stories. That is the most exciting part of my career.

Right now I have a TV show called Abstract Morph on Built My Way Media TV. You can download the app on any Roku device. I get to interview various people, hear their stories and learn about what makes them unique. I am also producing a few other projects set to launch later this year on the same platform.

I have been blessed to be apart of some other projects like the movie Slide which was just released on Peacock, TUBI and Pluto TV. I was a casting assistant for this project under Kim Tumey entertainment. I was privileged to pick the lead male in the movie which just so happens to be R&B singer Jacquees.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three most important qualities that were impactful to my journey are,

1) Having a relationship with God.
2) Having patience.
3) Unrelenting Perseverance.

Any Job in Media can be tough.
You have to be willing to go above and beyond to breakthrough and establish yourself. Always have more than one skill set related to this field. You will need these extra skills, it will come in handy and set you apart.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I am feeling overwhelmed I step back, I rest, and I pray. We live in such a demanding hustle culture that taking a break is a sign of weakness or laziness. Put your phone down, close the laptop, rest, and talk to God.
