Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jelena Jemi Miladinovic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jelena Jemi, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from a belief that every goal can be accomplished easier when being optimistic. Also, I think that being optimistic opens new doors in both personal and professional life. In general I look positively towards life and being optimistic in situations that were life changing helped me overcome the difficulties and helped me believe I was doing a right thing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Right now I’m working from Van Nuys private airport which is the biggest private airport in California and by operations it’s the biggest one in the US. I’m on the software side teaching pilots how to use this software, and helping out with the questions and the requests. The most exciting part of my job is being surrounded by various types of private airplanes, watching how the planes are taken care of and meeting people in the industry. Fun fact is that majority of people in the industry are very tall. Also, being at this busy airport, there is no dull moment.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first skill that is very important is discipline. I learned this skill in my athlete days and I kept applying it later on to in life. Waking up every morning for practice and consistently training for 10 times a week helped me to learn to stay focused and not get thrown off my professional goals. Being truthful to yourself and others is the second trait I learned it was very important. While being a case manager for human trafficked children, it was almost crucial to not give false statements or information even by accident, because that would make the child/teenager not trust you and sometimes it would be impossible to build that trust back. Building the trust is important in any type of relationship in my life.
The third trait I found very important is the ability to stay positive, optimistic have fun and laugh. Growing up in Serbia, when I was 8 years old, there was a war and despite the situation, many people I know stayed positive and playful and that helped them to overcome the difficulties.
My advice for people who are early in their journey is just to stay disciplined and consistent because that will help sharpen their mindset; to not be afraid to rely on people they have built a strong trust with and to not forget to have fun and relax when there are things that don’t depend on them.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed it helps me to talk to a good friend or a family member about everything besides what’s overwhelming me. Even when we talk about random things, we will get caught into the conversation, maybe start laughing and then the tenseness goes away. After the tenseness goes away, it’s much easier to look at the subject from another angle.
