We were lucky to catch up with Jem Calobrace recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jem, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
Who I am today is profoundly shaped by my grandmother, Lorenza. My sense of generosity is a gift from her, as she lovingly cared for my sister and me from the moment we were born in the Philippines. Alongside her, my aunt provided us with everything we needed, treating us as her own children and ensuring we were always supported and cared for. They have been a tremendous blessing in our lives. I am convinced that our upbringing and environment play a vital role in shaping who we are, alongside our innate personalities. Growing up, I was deeply moved by my grandmother’s unwavering love and boundless generosity towards everyone, regardless of who they were—family, strangers, good or bad people. She never questioned anyone’s worth; she gave selflessly because that’s who she was, not because of who they were.
Her acts of kindness were not selective, she treated everyone with the same level of care and compassion. This profoundly influenced me, instilling a sense of unconditional generosity. My grandmother didn’t teach me any specific lessons to apply to myself or insist that I copy her. It was simply her pure love and generosity that radiated within me and inspired me to become who I am. I absorbed this trait deeply from her, which is why I strongly believe that someone’s generosity can impact another’s life and personality.
I’m willing to help others, whether they’re strangers or not, regardless of their intentions. Because that is who I am and I believe that when we pray to God, He doesn’t question who we are or whether we are good or bad, He blesses us with what we need and pray for. This principle guides me in my acts of giving, as exemplified by my grandmother.
For me, generosity is about acting out of a genuine desire to help and make others feel valued, without expecting anything in return. It’s about recognizing human need and responding to it, just as my grandmother does. Her example has taught me that true generosity is neither conditional nor judgmental but rather an expression of who we are.
Giving, without judgment, brings me immense happiness, just as it does for my grandmother. Seeing the joy and relief in others, knowing I’ve made a positive impact, fulfills me deeply. Her values live on through me, and I hope to pass on the same kindness and generosity to others, continuing the cycle she started.
I am very lucky and blessed to have met a husband and in-laws who share the same heart as my grandmother and me. Their generosity and kindness inspire me and reinforce the importance of giving without expecting anything in return. I have become a better person, woman, and wife to their son. Together, we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others, upholding the values that have been passed down to us.
I’ve also noticed that I’ve passed on this spirit of generosity to my nephew. One day, he texted me to express how much he appreciates all my love, care, and dedication to helping them. He told me that my selflessness has inspired him to be a better person and to study hard. Knowing that my actions have had such a positive influence on him and his siblings makes me feel incredibly grateful and fulfilled.
Unfortunately, in this world, asking for help can be one of the hardest things to do and receive. However, having a benevolent soul in your life not only brings comfort but also shapes who you become, inspiring you to be strong and achieve your goals.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Jem Calobrace, and I am blessed to be married to my amazing husband, Jon Calobrace, a veteran whose strength and kindness inspire me every day. Our adventure together has been filled with love, support, and countless cherished moments.
I have had the privilege of working in various fields that have significantly shaped who I am today. For seven years, I lived in the Middle East, working as a flight attendant, which gave me the incredible opportunity to explore diverse cultures and visit places I never imagined I would experience. This experience not only broadened my horizons but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for travel and storytelling. After that, I worked for one of the largest aviation companies in the United States. However, due to some health concerns, I recently had to stop working and become a stay-at-home wife. This transition led me to open a small heat press business, 30 Print Street where I customize shirts, mugs, puzzles, and other items. This new venture has been a rewarding way to channel my creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Through this business, I also support causes like Alzheimer’s, Autism, and Cancer Awareness, helping to raise awareness and make a positive impact.
My entrepreneurial journey began long before this. In the Philippines, I loved doing business and owned several ventures, including a heat press business, a clothing boutique, an event production company, and a skincare business. These experiences have provided me with a diverse skill set and a passion for entrepreneurship.
What makes my journey special is the unexpected path it has taken. An unexpected event, where an “unknown hand creature” appeared from our apartment soffit ceiling, went viral, garnering over a hundred million views and turning my social media presence into a platform with significant reach. This unexpected event opened doors to collaborations with various brands, allowing me to promote products I genuinely believe in.
I am also excited to announce that I am one of the newly appointed brand ambassadors for Contiki Travel. I will be focusing on promoting their travel experiences and sharing my adventures with my audience. Additionally, I will be creating content about my experiences as a flight attendant, as it is one of the most in-demand topics I receive messages about. Many people have been asking for tips and advice, and I feel grateful that they are rooting for me to help them. To provide more value, I am preparing to conduct interviews with current and former flight attendants via zoom to gain additional tips and inspiration. I will also be interviewing successful entrepreneurs to share their advice and insights. I believe their stories can offer valuable lessons and motivation for others on their own entrepreneurial journeys. This content will be beneficial not only for aspiring flight attendants but also for life in general.
Additionally, I have always wanted to become a makeup artist with a special focus on doing makeovers for the elderly. My goal is to make them feel beautiful again in their lives. If given the opportunity, I would love to open a senior care home to provide comprehensive care and support for the elderly, ensuring they live their lives with dignity and joy. I have a huge heart for elders, deeply rooted in the love I have for my grandma. Honoring her and the wisdom and experiences of all elderly people, I am passionate about advocating for their well-being and celebrating their invaluable contributions.
I am also planning to launch my clothing brand, Saudade Collection, which is dedicated to capturing the essence of nostalgia through timeless and evocative fashion pieces. My goal is to offer clothing that not only looks beautiful but also tells a story, resonating with those who cherish the past while embracing the present.
Through my journey, I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions and embrace the opportunities that come their way, no matter how unexpected. My brand is all about authenticity, generosity, and the joy of exploration. I hope to continue growing my platform and connecting with even more people who share my love for custom gifts, inspiring content, and the thrill of travel and adventure.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Empathy and Compassion:
Empathy and compassion have played a significant role in my journey, especially during my time as a flight attendant. Understanding and connecting with passengers on an emotional level helped me handle difficult situations and provide exceptional service. These qualities allowed me to offer comfort and support to passengers in distress, creating a positive and caring environment.
To develop empathy and compassion, actively practice putting yourself in others’ shoes. Listen to others’ stories and experiences with an open mind and heart. Developing emotional intelligence through self-reflection and mindfulness can also enhance your ability to empathize with others.
Adaptability:
One of the most impactful qualities in my journey has been adaptability. Working as a flight attendant in the Middle East and later transitioning to married life in the US, and a stay-at-home entrepreneur required me to adjust to new environments, roles, and challenges. Adaptability allows you to navigate through unexpected changes and make the most out of every situation.
Expose yourself to diverse experiences and be open to change. Embrace new opportunities, even if they push you out of your comfort zone. Learn to stay calm and focused during transitions, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. Additionally, practice flexibility in your daily life by trying new things, such as learning a new skill or hobby, which can help you become more comfortable with change.
Entrepreneurial Mindset:
Having an entrepreneurial mindset has significantly shaped my path. This includes being proactive, taking risks, and continuously seeking opportunities for growth. My entrepreneurial ventures in the Philippines and the heat press business I run now are testaments to the importance of this mindset.
Start by setting clear goals and developing a plan to achieve them. Stay curious and keep learning about different industries and trends. Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs or mentors who can provide guidance and inspiration. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and learn from failures. Additionally, practice resilience and persistence, as setbacks are a part of the entrepreneurial journey. Develop problem-solving skills by tackling challenges head-on and thinking creatively about solutions.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
In reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the many sources of inspiration and support that have guided me. My grandmother’s unwavering love, My husband’s steadfast encouragement, Having my sister and her kids in my life has given me the strength to succeed, as their happiness and well-being are my driving forces and my faith in God have all played crucial roles in shaping who I am today. They have played pivotal roles in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge needed for success.
Faith in God
My faith in God has been a guiding force throughout my life. Trusting in God’s plan and seeking His guidance in times of uncertainty has provided me with strength and clarity. Prayer and faith have helped me stay grounded and focused, especially during challenging times.
My Grandmother
My grandmother has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional development. Her unwavering love, generosity, and resilience have been a source of inspiration throughout my life. Growing up, I observed her compassion and dedication, which instilled in me the values of empathy and hard work. She taught me the importance of kindness and the impact it can have on others, shaping my approach to my entrepreneurial ventures and interactions with others.
My Husband
Jonathan, my loving husband, is the foundation of my strength and resilience. His unwavering belief in my abilities and his boundless kindness have been my anchor through the most tumultuous times. When I transitioned from my career as a flight attendant to becoming an entrepreneur, he was my rock, offering unwavering encouragement and steadfast support. During my health challenges, his gentle care and comforting presence were my lifeline. My husband’s love is not just in the grand gestures but in the countless little things he does daily, reminding me of my worth and potential.
Even when I doubt myself, he believes in me and never stops praising me. His practical advice has guided me, his emotional support has uplifted me, and his constant motivation has kept me moving forward, even when the path seemed insurmountable. His faith in me has been a beacon of hope and strength, lighting the way during my darkest moments.
My parents-in-law Dad Larry and Mom Beverly have also been a tremendous source of support and love. Their acceptance and encouragement have made me feel like a true part of the family. Their kindness and understanding have provided an additional layer of comfort and security, helping me to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.
My Only Sister and Her Kids
The love I have for my only sister, Jhel and her kids Prince, Jacob, Bella and Bochog is a profound source of inspiration in my life. Their love and innocence touch my heart deeply, reminding me of the pure, unselfish love that exists within a family. Their presence inspires me to work harder, strive for greatness, and create a comfortable and fulfilling life for all of us.
Their love and respect for me remind me of the importance of perseverance, encouraging me to never give up, no matter how tough the journey gets. My sister and her children have taught me that the support and love of family are powerful forces that can drive us to achieve great things. They inspire me to create a positive impact through my work, knowing that everything I do sets an example for them. Their presence in my life is a constant source of joy and motivation, and their unwavering faith in me strengthens my resolve to be the best version of myself.
The commitment to continuous learning and self-reflection has been a critical component of my success. Taking the time to assess my experiences, learn from them, and seek out new knowledge has allowed me to adapt and grow. This mindset has helped me to stay resilient and open to new opportunities, even in the face of challenges.
Ultimately, nobody can help you overcome challenges but yourself. It’s essential to cultivate self-motivation and resilience. Always think of yourself as a work in progress, recognizing that success is an ongoing journey. Keep building something new, strive to learn more every day, and remain open to growth and improvement.
Through continuous learning, self-reflection, and a commitment to personal growth, I have navigated the challenges and triumphs along the way. As I continue to strive for success, I am driven by the desire to pay forward the support and love I have received, and to inspire others to pursue their passions with the same fervor and dedication. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of familial love, and the profound impact of unwavering faith and support.
I have also noticed how profoundly the influence of those around us—especially family, partners, and in-laws—can shape our lives. Some individuals I know have made poor choices and faced hardships because they lacked the support and positive influence that are so crucial to our development and success. Without this support, they often lose their interest, self-confidence, self-respect, and inspiration to keep going. That’s why I am incredibly blessed to be surrounded by a loving and supportive husband, wonderful in-laws, and a nurturing family. Their unwavering belief in me, their kindness, and their encouragement have been the foundation of my strength and resilience. They have guided me through challenges and celebrated my triumphs, helping me grow and succeed.
This highlights the immense responsibility we all have in each other’s lives. Our actions and words can either uplift and inspire or bring down and destroy someone. Let us strive to be the kind of people who lift each other up, support one another, and create environments where everyone can thrive. I am grateful for the positive influences in my life and hope to encourage others to be that same source of support and strength for those around them.
We received this piece of wisdom, which has always inspired me, and I hung it in my workshop. It’s from Dr. Dang and his wife, Mrs. Anh, a wonderful couple from Illinois who hold a special place in our hearts:
“We all want peace.
We all want prosperity.
We all want to protect those we love.
We all experience the sting of suffering and loss.
We all seek meaning.
May our differences keep us inquisitive and engaged, and may our commonalities keep us kind and compassionate as we pass through this life together.”
