Meet Jemma Wiltshire

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jemma Wiltshire. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jemma below.

Jemma, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I had to completely change the way I thought about my business and distance myself from my designs in order to get over impostor feeling. Realising that, even while my work reflects my creativity, it is a solution rather than something to grow attached to is the process at work. Even now, when I own a profitable design business, I sometimes have questions like, “Is this really good enough?” However, I’ve developed the ability to snap out of it and remind myself that I have a lot of experience, am extremely qualified, and have been doing well in this industry for a long time.

I actively remind myself to break the negative cycle during those times. If you don’t confront self-doubt head-on, it’s easy to let it take over. I hence make it a point to instantly reframe those negative ideas with something positive, such as emphasising how well my design fits the client’s brief or how much value I’m adding to their brand, as soon as such thoughts occur.

I’ve discovered that the secret to keeping confidence is to focus my attention on what is working rather than on my worries. It’s a constant discipline, but it keeps me focused on the reality that years of experience, not just sporadic inspiration, support my work. Most significantly, even in the face of doubt, I’ve learnt to have faith that my knowledge and expertise will enable me to consistently provide my clients with exactly what they need.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m Jemma, a graphic designer that is passionate about making visuals that have a purpose and uplift brands. Serving entrepreneurs, businesses, and creatives in the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, and beyond, my studio specialises in modern brand and web design. My work’s unique combination of strategy and creativity is what most interests me. Every design I make is made with a greater goal in mind, whether it be making a business stand out in a crowded market, drawing in the proper customers, or establishing trust.

My method is unique because I pay close attention to details and concentrate on leaving a lasting impression on each brand. I really think that design has the ability to change a business, and I love taking part in that process. My clientele includes both well-known corporations and solopreneurs, but they all want to build a brand that authentically captures their essence and embodies their beliefs. I take great satisfaction in providing them with custom, personalised designs that complement their goals and position them for long-term success.

My objective is to assist customers in gaining clarity and confidence in their brand identity, whether it be through logo design, website creation, or whole brand overhauls, providing them with the means to differentiate themselves and thrive in their industry.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I believe that my journey was mostly influenced by three qualities: creativity, strategic thinking, and clear communication. These aspects not only enabled me to grow a profitable design business but also provide my clients with genuine value.

Creativity is the foundation of every design work, but it has been essential to understand how to combine it with a goal. My designs aim to elevate businesses and solve problems in addition to being aesthetically pleasing. I would advise someone just starting out to always be developing their creative abilities. Regularly undertaking passion projects or design challenges is a great way to do this.

Early on, I saw that strategy is necessary for design to have a long-lasting effect. With time, I created a method that emphasises learning the client’s brand, positioning in the market, and objectives inside and out before beginning any creative work. For both me and my clientele, this has changed everything. I advise beginners to improve their strategic abilities by learning how to frame pertinent questions and see the wider picture. This kind of thinking will set you apart and guarantee that your work is both imaginative and meaningful.

In order for me to develop trusting relationships with my clients, communication has been key. The ability to communicate design decisions, comprehend customer demands, and work well in a team environment guarantees projects run smoothly and successfully. I would advise you to communicate honestly and openly with your clients. Deliver designs, but also communicate your thought process and pay attention to feedback. As a result, trust is increased and projects run much smoother.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
