Meet Jen Brooks

We were lucky to catch up with Jen Brooks recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jen, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room can certainly present its challenges, but it’s also an opportunity to shine and make a positive impact. Here are some strategies I’ve found effective in navigating such situations:

Confidence and Self-Awareness: Embrace your unique perspective and the value it brings to the table. Understand your strengths, expertise, and the qualities that set you apart. This self-awareness can boost your confidence and help you contribute effectively.

Preparation: Go the extra mile in preparing for meetings or discussions. Being well-informed and knowledgeable about the topic at hand not only showcases your expertise but also demonstrates your commitment to making a meaningful contribution.

Networking: Build relationships with colleagues and peers who appreciate your insights and perspective. Networking can help you find allies who will support and amplify your ideas, making it easier to navigate potentially challenging situations.

Speak Up: Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts and ideas. Your unique viewpoint can offer fresh insights that others might not have considered. Speak confidently, and don’t be afraid to contribute to discussions.

Be a Role Model: By excelling in your role, you’re setting an example for others who may feel similarly isolated. Your success can inspire them to persevere and excel despite any obstacles they face.

Embrace Challenges: Instead of avoiding challenges, see them as opportunities for growth. Overcoming difficulties can strengthen your resilience and adaptability, making you even more effective in the long run.

Educate and Advocate: Take the initiative to educate others about your experiences and perspective. Help them understand the importance of diversity and inclusion. Advocating for inclusivity benefits not only you but the entire group.

Stay Open-Minded: Even though you may be the only one who looks like you in the room, remember that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Stay open-minded and receptive to diverse viewpoints.

Seek Mentorship: Find mentors and role models who have navigated similar situations. Their guidance and insights can provide valuable strategies for success.

Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. Recognize the progress you’re making and the positive impact you’re creating.

Remember, your uniqueness is your strength. Embrace your role as a trailblazer and use your presence in the room to not only make a difference for yourself but also to pave the way for others. Your ability to excel in challenging circumstances will not only drive your success but also contribute to a more diverse and inclusive environment.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a high school athletic director. For years I was often the only woman in the room. After reaching out to the national organization that houses high school athletic directors and asking if they could create a space specific for female athletic directors and being told no, I created the Global Community of Women in High School Sports. I love spending my days working with the athletes at my school as well as supporting this network of women working in high school sports. I have created a presentation called, “The Power of Being the Only Woman in the Room” and enjoy presenting to various organizations.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, there were three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that stood out as most impactful in my success. Here’s what they were, along with advice for those who are early in their own journeys on how to develop or improve these aspects:

Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing forward is crucial. Challenges are inevitable, but how you respond to them makes all the difference. Cultivate resilience by embracing failures as learning opportunities and maintaining a growth mindset. Surround yourself with a supportive network and practice self-care to stay mentally and emotionally strong.

Continuous Learning: In a rapidly changing world, staying curious and committed to learning is vital. Be open to new ideas, seek out knowledge, and adapt to evolving trends. Invest in your personal and professional development by reading, taking courses, attending workshops, and seeking mentorship. Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning to stay relevant and innovative.

Effective Communication: No matter your field, the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively is essential. Whether presenting ideas, collaborating with others, or conveying your brand’s message, strong communication skills set you apart. Practice active listening, hone your writing and speaking abilities, and adapt your communication style to different audiences. Remember that effective communication goes beyond words – it also involves empathy and understanding.

Advice for Early Journey:

Embrace Challenges: Don’t fear challenges; view them as stepping stones toward growth. Embracing difficulties can lead to valuable experiences and increased resilience.

Set Goals: Clearly define your goals and break them down into manageable steps. This helps maintain focus and motivation as you make progress.

Seek Feedback: Constructive feedback is a valuable tool for improvement. Actively seek feedback from mentors, peers, or customers to refine your skills and offerings.

Network: Build relationships within your field and beyond. Networking provides opportunities for learning, collaboration, and exposure to diverse perspectives.

Stay Curious: Cultivate curiosity by exploring new subjects, industries, or approaches. This curiosity fuels creativity and keeps your journey exciting.

Practice Patience: Success takes time. Be patient with yourself and your progress, celebrating even small achievements along the way.

Fail Forward: Don’t let failures discourage you. Instead, analyze what went wrong, learn from it, and apply those lessons to future endeavors.

Balance and Well-being: Remember to prioritize your well-being. Balance work with relaxation, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones. A healthy mind and body are essential for sustained success.

Stay Adaptable: The ability to adapt to change is paramount. Embrace uncertainty and be open to adjusting your plans as needed.

In the early stages of your journey, focus on personal growth, skill development, and building a strong foundation. Embrace challenges, stay open to learning, and cultivate qualities like resilience, continuous learning, and effective communication. With dedication and a growth mindset, you’ll set yourself up for a fulfilling and successful journey ahead.
