Meet Jen Fontanilla

We were lucky to catch up with Jen Fontanilla recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jen, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
I would have to say that it probably started back in elementary school when we had to give presentations. I was a little nerd and over achiever and it was so important for me to get the good grades and nail the “A”. I joke that I am a recovering perfectionist! So, from an early age, I understood the importance of practicing your presentations and being able to explain things clearly and intentionally. I think presentations, being a competitive dancer and performing in plays were probably the groundwork for why I love public speaking today. However, I realized that knowing how to communicate effectively is a significant skillset because it affects your interactions with others, particularly in problem solving and coming up with solutions, even in times of disagreement. Knowing how to do this is so key to getting ahead and creating harmonious relationships in your life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I love that I get to blend and create a unique speciality in which I take my 25 plus years of experience as a graphic designer with my 18 years in financial services. I have a technical background as a former financial advisor, but I understand how to bring in the creative side when working with a financial company’s marketing, programs and communications because I understand the financial lingo and how to turn it into something people can relate to.

In recent years, I transitioned into coaching, discovering a passion for helping creative entrepreneurs overcome their money mindset barriers and unraveling subconscious patterns hindering their financial success. My focus is on empowering individuals to embrace their core talents, thrive, earn what they deserve, and create and live out a life they love. From a money mindset standpoint, my approach involves helping clients people enhance their self-worth by examining past patterns, assessing their relationship with their parents, and understanding the influence of early money lessons on current financial decision-making.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first one would be to learn how to take risks. Taking risks has been a huge part of my journey. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, embracing uncertainty, and being open to new possibilities – even when you think there’s a chance that it might not work. My advice for those starting their journey is to acknowledge that growth often lies just beyond the edge of familiarity. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks—whether it’s trying out a new venture, taking on a challenging project, or exploring uncharted territories.

Always be working on your money mindset. The learning never stops, especially when it comes to our relationship with money. Continuously educate yourself on financial matters, understand your financial decisions and become aware of your subconscious patterns and where they came from. Be open to evolving. Having a healthy money mindset is a powerful tool that will enable you to realize your worthiness and to be open and accepting of success and wealth.

And finally, know how to regulate your emotions. Emotions can be both allies and adversaries. Learning to regulate them has been instrumental in maintaining my focus and resilience. It’s okay to feel the highs and lows, but developing emotional intelligence allows you to navigate challenges with grace. Practice mindfulness, self-reflection, and find healthy outlets for expressing and managing your emotions. This skill will not only enhance your personal well-being but also positively impact your professional journey.

For those at the early stages of their journey, my advice is simple: embrace the unknown, never stop learning, especially about your relationship with money, and cultivate the ability to regulate your emotions. These qualities will not only shape your journey but also contribute to a more fulfilling and resilient path forward.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my most significant area of growth has been learning to let go and establish boundaries. I’ve learned to release what no longer serves me, particularly in certain relationships. Setting clear boundaries has become a strength, allowing me to prioritize my well-being and focus on what truly matters.

Equally transformative has been my shift in perspective towards outcomes. I’ve embraced the philosophy of not getting attached to specific results. This mindset shift has brought a sense of freedom and resilience, enabling me to navigate uncertainties with ease and grace.

I’ve also learned how to increase my capacity to receive. I’ve actively created space for what I aspire to be, do, and have. This involves not just conceptualizing, but also living by universal laws, understanding their principles, and aligning my actions with these fundamental forces. It’s been a journey of personal empowerment, and the tangible results speak volumes about the strides I’ve made in the past year.
