We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jen Rubinetti. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jen below.
Jen, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Well, for most of my life, I believed my worth was contingent upon what I could do for people. I thought every interaction and relationship was transactional… that somehow I was only interesting to others if I could make something happen for them or resolve an issue they were dealing with. It didn’t occur to me to mind being this kind of “fixer” because it meant that I was needed… and wanted. It is in my nature to assume leadership roles in group settings and to mediate problems when I see them arise, so I was often called upon through childhood and adulthood to help in so many instances I probably had no business being part of at all. It was a difficult way to move through the world because I began to feel that was all I was meant for and I held no other real value. After many years in this mindset, I even chose a career that was based on creating success for others. I became a model agent and spent my days promoting other people to designers and brands and staying neatly tucked behind the scenes, where it was safe. A big part of my career was about problem solving (missed flights, schedule shifts, body issues, changes in direction, contracts) so my clients could just relax and be in the spotlight. In the office, my role as a ‘fixer’ manifested in me becoming like an unofficial HR person for the company. People turned to me to mitigate even small dilemmas and mediate big disagreements. I was very much in my comfort zone with that. While I enjoyed being useful, I lacked a feeling of real fulfillment. I lacked passion. I also yearned to be valued for who I was and not just what I could make happen for others.
When the pandemic hit, there was very little for me to do in my current career. Fashion had more or less gone to sleep and I found myself at home with a lot of time on my hands. Many old heartaches and unresolved traumas started to come to the surface because there was so little else going on and my focus became available for it. The universe heard my call, though, and I was introduced to an Ayurvedic Coach named Vishnupriya Thacker. Though I was planted firmly with my feet on the ground, I had always been interested in the healing arts and the metaphysical world so this intro felt right. We worked together on a mind-body-soul level for several years, but during the course of it, she always maintained she was just a channel to my own healing and not the healer herself. To me, the idea that there was something bigger than us and some divine order/guidance to things intrigued me more than anything else. In the course of my life and career, I had turned to different kinds of coaches and healers to help me through old traumas and new dilemmas from a spiritual and mystical standpoint, but this time I was really ready for a personal transformation. Working with Vishnupriya inspired me to take a deep dive into the modalities I had access to from my computer. I chose to study energy work. The intention was to help myself & my family through covid and the aftermath while we were in lockdown, but it turned out to have much bigger impact on my life than I anticipated. I invested in courses in Reiki and Sound Meditation and got my certifications in both. I also studied The Silva Method. I began using my new skills to ease my kids into restful sleep when they became anxious about the state of the world. I worked on old aches and pains I carried in my body after many doctors failed to treat them effectively. I practiced on my husband when he became stressed over his own work stagnation and couldn’t calm his thoughts. I felt magical and useful, but as a channel rather than as a fixer. I felt I had finally stumbled upon something that allowed me to still be of service to others, but also be in alignment with myself. Energy work is not about solving things or creating things for other people, but more about helping them overcome and achieve things for themselves. I had just found my purpose.
Once the lockdown lifted, I, like everyone else, gradually returned to the real world and eventually office life. To say it was jarring would be an understatement. I was incapable of going back to how things were. I needed to infuse the energy work I’d been doing into my career and I needed to stay energetically aligned with helping others on a vibrational level. I began sharing my new abilities with people I worked with and in the industry. To my delight, many people showed great interest in what I was doing… perhaps because of their own experiences with covid and lockdown and the way the world transformed in that time. There was indeed a great shift and awakening in humanity. Before long, I began getting requests for my help in a less transactional way. People were actually interested in the healing component of what I was doing and not so much the “fixing” I did before. I organically became someone that others turned to when they were seeking more than just a complaint department. I was emanating a different energy now and I was actually happy to be the person who was sought out to facilitate healing for others, instead of feeling used for it. It was then I decided to also become certified in Life Coaching so that I could help people on an even deeper level and also continue on my own healing path.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Thanks for asking! I have such great stuff happening now. After so many instances where I saw a true need in others for the kind of work I’ve done on myself, I created The Mystical Connection. I call myself a Wellness Concierge because I’m all about connecting people with what they need to find their happiness. I lead my own events, but also work in collaboration with other practitioners to create experiences based around aligning with one’s higher self and bringing more joy into our own earthly experiences. My goal is creating workshops, keynote events and retreats based around mindset shifting, spiritual growth and reclaiming one’s sense of self and fulfillment. I work with a lot of people who are in a phase of life where they’ve been successful in big ways but still feel a longing for something deeper and bigger. Many also need to let go of old traumas and shed the stories they’ve told themselves about who they are. To be clear, I am not a therapist (although I have a profound respect for therapy) but I do try to be a conduit for overcoming blockages and moving toward what we want more of in our lives. My goal is to introduce people to ways they can manifest the life they really want. We all have the ability to heal ourselves and co-create the reality we desire, but what so many people need is a place to start. I’m like an accountability partner with a side of mystical.
In the coming months, I am offering one-on-one coaching sessions, private sound baths and Reiki sessions but also facilitating local workshops and events in NYC. One of my favorites is a simple sound meditation (they’re usually about 1-2 hours) where I gently guide attendees into a state of deep relaxation. The goal is to create an intention about something you want to either release or attain and then let the vibrational sound frequency take your mind to a place where you can start making that intention a reality. We often do a sharing circle afterward which participants seem to enjoy.
I have a podcast in the works called The Manifest-Station which is in the editing phase right now and will soon be launched this year. My podcast partner and real life friend is Author, Speaker and Mindset coach, Joanna Rajendran, She also teaches an online course called Best.Life.Ever which aligns beautifully with what I do.
In late September, Joanna and I will be leading a retreat in Tuscany called BEtreat. It will be 6 days of soul-healing, alignment work, inspiration and FUN with 10-11 attendees. We couldn’t be more excited. We just did a soft announcement about it but sign-ups are open and we can each be contacted via our websites / social media accounts. It’s reasonably priced and will be a life-shifting experience for everyone who attends. I’m so excited about it!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First thing I needed was to realize that my happiness wasn’t going to be found in external places. I needed to do the work and heal the narratives I’d created that were holding me back. I was lucky enough to meet a guide that helped me to move onto the path I’m on now. The universe is always conspiring to help us and will put people, signs and opportunities in front of us to take us in the right direction – we just need to open our eyes to see them.
Secondly, I needed to focus on what I did best and shift it into something that worked for me. I knew I had a gift in helping others, but I just needed to clarify what that meant for me and how to make it something that fulfilled me and didn’t drain me. We all have a purpose. The question is how do we find it and what do we do with it once we know what it is? That’s what I want to help others focus on, now that I have discovered my own.
Third is sort of 2 parts. Compassion and a true desire to see others thrive are the qualities that most shaped me into who I am right now. I’m a native New Yorker, so I am all about realness and have a bit of a hard exterior sometimes, but within me is a well of empathy and wish to help people. I think it’s the combo of being a straight shooter (with a street-edge quality) while still being kind that makes me unique in the world of spirituality and coaching.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Perfectionism is probably the biggest blocker of happiness I can think of, and I suffer from it on a deep level. It Ieads to self-doubt, stagnation and Imposter Syndrome when things aren’t exactly as you want them to be. Just putting myself out there with the offerings I’ve created was the first obstacle in my path. Constantly questioning who am I to think I could really help others while still working through my own hang-ups and obstacles…. wondering why anyone would choose to work with me? I needed to drop the act and stop trying to convince the world I had all the answers, because that’s not the goal! I had to realize we ALL have the answers to our own questions and it’s just about finding them inside ourselves. I’m a work in progress…. but what’s helping me the most is the belief that I’m on the right path and the answers will come to me if I let go of the controls and allow them in. It’s an every day challenge and sometimes I’m still guilty of sometimes trying to force things to be how I want them to be, but ultimately, it’s when I shed the armor and release myself to divine inspiration, things become clearer and much, much easier. This mindset also helped me realize that my qualities and my own uniqueness is what will bring clients to me. There will always, ALWAYS be greater and lesser people in the world doing what you do, but none of them will do it exactly like you do it and that’s your superpower.
