Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jen Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jen with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in the values my parents instilled in me and my commitment to leaving this world better than I found it. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand my parents’ embodiment of hard work and compassion.
Their acts of kindness and generosity have left an indelible mark on me. From rushing to aid a farmer in need during a barn fire to going above and beyond to assist those facing hardships, my parents have shown me that genuine care for others is at the core of making a difference.
Their example has shaped not only my work ethic but also my personal mission—to leave this world a little brighter than I found it. When you genuinely care about people and the world around you, it naturally motivates you to work harder.
There’s also a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from accomplishing something through hard work. It’s not just about achieving goals but also about the journey—the challenges overcome and the lessons learned along the way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
From a young age, I found myself drawn to various interests – arts, sports (soccer being my fav), and even medicine, envisioning a future in healthcare driven by a passion for making a meaningful impact in the world.
However, life took an unexpected turn, leading me down a different path. I veered off the medical track and pursued cake decorating, launching my first company at 20. Despite success as a Certified Sugar Artist and Pastry Chef, I felt something was missing. Exploring various careers, including roles in healthcare and hospitality, none seemed to fill the void of wanting to help people in a significant way until I discovered acting.
Watching actors like Chris Evans, Kristen Bell, and Ryan Reynolds, among others, use their platforms to make a difference in the world, opened my eyes to the missing piece in my life.
My cake company opened doors to the world of TV, as I appeared on shows like Grand River Living and had a monthly teaching segment on Rogers Daytime TV for over a year. I was even offered my own TV show called the “Smile Project” and filmed the pilot. Though I was unable to continue the series due to schedules and commitments, I was honored to be offered the show. After Rogers Daytime TV went off the air, a producer who knew me suggested I should audition for a TV series auditioning in Hamilton. She knew I had enjoyed doing drama and musicals in high school and thought it might be what I was looking for.
I landed a lead role, marking the beginning of my professional acting career. Through diverse projects like “The Taste of Blood” and “Cry of Silence,” I’ve embraced storytelling as a medium for connection and impact.
Through my acting journey, I’ve discovered a passion for training in stunts, martial arts, boxing, and action for film. Working with diamond humans, friends, and mentors Taz Garcia and Wayne Wells, their guidance and support have been invaluable preparing me for upcoming action projects. I’ve learned so much both physically and creatively from them, and I’m deeply grateful for everything they’ve taught me and continue to teach me.
In 2022, I founded Country Girl Productions to contribute to the Canadian film industry and provide a platform for talented individuals. Alongside this venture, I initiated The Lakoda Project, aimed to combat food insecurity and homelessness. The Lakoda Project is still in development with the hope of becoming a full-fledged charity in the future. Through these endeavors, I’m committed to making a positive difference and empowering others to pursue their dreams.
My other passion project in association with AKOOLFILM COMPANY Inc., “Trickle & Flow,” is a Canadian crime series that marries my entrepreneurial spirit and creative vision. It’s an endeavor close to my heart, as I aspire to offer a fresh and uniquely Canadian perspective to the genre.
Trickle & Flow is a riveting crime drama complete with mystery, witty humor, plot twists, action, and more. What sets our series apart is our unwavering dedication to showcasing genuine diversity while crafting relatable characters that deeply connect with our audience. So yes, we’ll make you laugh, cry, and sit on the edge of your seats – sometimes all in the same scene.
The heart of the series lies in the compelling dynamic between Ben Trickle, Luke Flow (portrayed by the immensely talented, versatile, and charismatic Tazito Garcia), Detective Riley Peters (played by myself), and their elite team, including Saad Siddiqui. Together, they navigate through challenges using their unique ‘special skills’ and quick wit. This unorthodox trio of crime solvers forms the core of the narrative, offering moments of levity amidst the intense drama.
I’m also working on two feature films called “Phoenix Rising” (a heartwarming and humorous romantic comedy) and “J-Money” (an action-packed crime thriller).
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Adaptability: Throughout my career, I’ve encountered numerous unexpected twists and turns, from shifting career paths to navigating the challenges of starting new ventures. Being adaptable has allowed me to embrace change, pivot when necessary, and remain open to new opportunities and possibilities. My advice for those early in their journey is to develop resilience by embracing failure as a learning opportunity, staying focused on their long-term vision, and maintaining a positive mindset even in the face of obstacles.
Tenacity: Pursuing my passions hasn’t always been easy, but my determination and persistence have been key in overcoming obstacles and staying focused on my goals. Whether it was launching my first company at a young age or transitioning into a new industry like acting, my tenacity has enabled me to push through challenges and keep moving forward.
Creativity: As an entrepreneur and artist, creativity has been at the core of everything I do. Whether it’s developing innovative concepts for my productions, finding unique solutions to problems, or bringing characters to life on screen, creativity has been instrumental in shaping my journey and driving my success.
For those who are early in their journey, I would advise focusing on developing these three qualities:
Cultivate adaptability by embracing change, staying open-minded, and being willing to explore new opportunities and directions.
Foster tenacity by setting clear goals, staying committed to your vision, and persevering in the face of challenges or setbacks.
Nurture creativity by allowing yourself to think outside the box, experimenting with new ideas, and finding inspiration in unexpected places.
By honing these skills, individuals can navigate their own paths with resilience, determination, and a creative mindset, ultimately leading to greater fulfillment and success in their endeavors.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I always love connecting with like-minded individuals and organizations who are committed to creating impactful film and television content. By joining forces, we can leverage our collective talents, resources, and networks to bring compelling stories to audiences worldwide.
Whether you’re an investor/brand looking to support meaningful projects, a talented actor or crew member seeking exciting opportunities, or a fellow storyteller eager to collaborate on creative endeavors, I believe that together, we can achieve great things.
