We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeneba “Jay Jay” Ghatt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeneba “Jay Jay”, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I credit experience, education, and self-awareness for my confidence and self-esteem. When you have studied your craft and took the time to learn as much as possible in your field, or generally, you can speak with authority on any topic and can handle being challenged. Also, I’ve been fortunate to be in some pretty impressive spaces like the White House briefing room, backstage with major recording acts, in intimate sized war rooms or jam sessions with top artists and influential figures and so awareness of what it’s like behind those doors, you feel confident being in any other room out there.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Currently, I am blissfully navigating my Act VI — after having had a series of very fun adventures in a variety of fields:
as a designated manager for a GRAMMY nominated singer; a co-author of a US Supreme Court brief; a publicist for an amphitheater that presented some of the biggest names in R&B and hip hop; a political correspondent who attended briefiings at the White House and met routinely with members of Congress; as a consumer and child advocate who lobbied the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communication Commission; as the only Black lawyer in a DC office of an international law firm; a columnist at a major newspaper; and a co-host of a nationally syndicated radio show where I got to interview and pick the brains of some pretty fantastic figures from a variety of creative spaces and a Founder of a stock photography company providing diverse imagery options for the world.
Life’s been quite a ride and in while I’ve always enjoyed educating audiences via my journalistic endeavors and representing the interests of others as an attorney, I’m finding joy in my latest challenge as a content creator, social media and Pinterest strategist.
I have spent the last few years cultivating and growing an audience and community as I help fellow content creators understand the laws that impact them as creators and members of a bourgeouning Creator Economy.
Through my social media presence, website and particularly, my YouTube and Tik Tok accounts, I opine on routine pop culture topics while providing supreme discounted templates for usage by fellow creators who cannot yet afford their own attorney.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge impactful in my journey:
1) tenacity – I’ve had varying levels of success in my many pivots in life but despite the down moments and failures, which have been plenty, I bounce back and continue to show up .
If you are early in your journey, you must not let things like failure deter you. A dream delayed is not a dream deferred. The dream only ends when you quit. You ‘ve got to dust yourself off, take time to mourn the losses and get back in the saddle and continue on the path to success. I know that’s a lot of cliches but I do find inspiration in quotes.
2) big picture outlook – Throughout my career, I have been able to take a bird’s eye macro view of the task at hand, the task ahead and the circumstances surrounding the task and to move accordingly.
Such a skill is necessary when you are just starting out because it is very easy to get lost in the minutiae of the day to day. You can get stuck when something doesn’t go right because you’re too hyper focused. Just get through it and prepare for the next adventure.
3) being well versed – I call myself the Jill of All Trades because I’ve done so many different varied things in life, work and business that I am able to fit into any space and have a frame of reference and can carry on conversations, have input and be able to make a contribution. Being knowledgeable in a bit of everything is just enough for you to be able to hold space in any venue or field.
If you’re young or just starting out, that can be a challenge but you can learn and live vicariously through others and can consume as many books, memoirs, YouTube channels and more out there where people share their life’s lessons and experiences.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking to partner or collaborate with platforms, companies or brands that are all about inspiring, educating, edifying and uplifing others through knowledge.
Think mastermind circles.
Think learning platforms.
Think speaker bureaus or series or universities that curate thought leaders and introduce them to the markets and audiences that are open and eager to learn.
