We were lucky to catch up with Jenn Proctor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism is something I’ve developed over time, largely because I had to. Growing up, things weren’t always stable, and that taught me early on to search for the light in the darkness. Initially, it was a survival mechanism, but over the years, it evolved into my natural way of seeing the world. I’ve found that focusing on the positive allows me to navigate life’s challenges with a clearer mind and a lighter heart. Now, it’s a conscious choice I make every day—to find the good, embrace humor, and surround myself with positive energy. And honestly, a great playlist doesn’t hurt either!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For the past 17 years, I’ve had the privilege of representing some of the most talented artists in the industry, and I genuinely love what I do. Over the last five years, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside my amazing partners, JC Gutierrez and Shelli Margheritis, at our company, Independent Artist Entertainment. What excites me most is being part of a team that’s deeply committed to making our artists’ dreams a reality. Supporting them, being in their corner, and witnessing their hard work pay off is truly a dream come true for me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, I’d say the three qualities that really helped me navigate this wild ride are resilience, adaptability, and communication skills.
Resilience: In this industry, you’ve got to be ready for anything! Think of it like a roller coaster—there will be ups, downs, and unexpected twists. My advice for those just starting out? Embrace the ride! Every bump is a chance to learn, so don’t let a little turbulence throw you off your game.
Adaptability: The entertainment world is like a game of musical chairs—always changing! Being open to new ideas and willing to switch things up is key. If you’re just starting, dive into different experiences and try out various roles. The more versatile you are, the better!
Communication Skills: Building relationships is everything! Good vibes and clear communication go a long way in creating trust and collaboration. My tip? Practice active listening and keep it real in your conversations. Join networking events or workshops to sharpen those skills and expand your circle.
So, if you focus on these qualities and keep a sense of fun along the way, you’ll be well on your way to making waves in this dynamic industry!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
When it comes to overcoming challenges and developing the essential skills I need for success, my longtime business partners, JC Gutierrez and Shelli Margheritis, have been my greatest allies. They have been instrumental in my growth, and I’ve learned so much from them over the years.
Not only do they provide invaluable insights and support, but they also create an environment where I feel seen and appreciated—a true trifecta of encouragement and collaboration. This journey has been so much more enjoyable with them by my side. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine navigating this industry without them. Together, we make a fantastic team, and I’m grateful for their partnership every day!
