Meet Jenna Mara

We recently connected with Jenna Mara and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenna, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I am the oldest daughter so I think naturally I am bound to have a good sense of confidence and self-esteem. I grew up playing sports and I think that played heavily into my confidence and self-esteem today. I had coaches and teachers, as well as my parents, who built me up in the things that I did growing up and always encouraged me to excel at those things. I’d like to think that I have a lot more confidence than most people I encounter day-to-day, I am fully comfortable being me!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a birth and postpartum doula, and what’s special about it is that I have the opportunity to walk with women and their families through a really important time in their lives. It’s hard to describe in words how amazing it is to witness birth and see babies take their first breath on earth. It truly is a gift from God.

I am still fairly new to doula work, I had my son a year and a half ago and before that I taught in the public schools for five years. I feel called to do doula work as I’m very passionate about birth and motherhood. I’ve attended a couple births this year and already have due dates books for 2026, I’m so excited to see what the new year brings!

I support women throughout their pregnancy, during birth, as well as postpartum. I usually see women three to four times for prenatal visits where I go over my contract, birth plan, things for labor prep, and expectations for postpartum. I’m available to all of my clients via text or phone call throughout their pregnancy as well. I want to build rapport with my clients and love it when we are able to chat outside of my visits because it helps create that friendship that makes everyone more comfortable in the birth room when the time comes! I love including husbands in prenatals as well for the same reason, I usually end up primarily communicating with them during labor anyhow!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My ability to teach is huge in doula work. A lot of what I do is educating my clients on their options in birth. I’m very good at staying calm in stressful scenarios too. Birth isn’t always stressful, but I have found I am able to be that calm presence if and when parents start to get stressed about something going on. I also tend to be very communicative and organized, which you need to be to make sure you know all your client’s due dates, hospital information, etc!

My advice for people who are early on in this journey of becoming a doula is to talk to a doula who you look up to and admire in how they run their business. If they have attracted you to their website or Instagram or you just like how they do things, ask them about it! Ask them what they do that makes them successful and try to emulate that in your business as well. It’s always good to have a role model when you’re starting something new like this. Be the doula you would want to hire!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I have found a really good community of doulas in the Phoenix area who align with my values. They have been very helpful in working out the kinks in my business, getting advice, and bouncing ideas off of each other. It’s been so fun to cheer each other on as well. There have been many times where we refer clients to each other and are just so excited for each other to find clients and attend births and gain new tools along the way.
