We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennie Ordaz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennie below.
Hi Jennie, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity definitely comes from my mom. Growing up I’ve always seen her be very selfless and sacrificing when it came to anything I ever needed. She was big on putting out positive energy into the world and believed that if you were kind to others, the kindness would be returned in your favor ten fold. Being in the service providing industry really allows me to meet other kind people and put a lot of love and care into the services that I provide for them in their hair and our conversations.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a licensed hairstylist. I specialize in hair color and hair cuts. I love the similar steps in the routine of doing hair color, but I also love that everyone’s hair is different so the challenges vary from client to client. I love that I get to meet so many new and unique people through my job that I wouldn’t otherwise have met in any other setting. Hair appointments definitely go beyond just sitting down and getting your hair done. We get to share our stories and experiences with one another when you’re in my chair and from the friendships that form through that, we also grow with one another as well through different phases of our lives. Most of my services focus on lived in, natural color and styles. In the future, I’d love to explore more of the aesthetic side of my cosmetology license. Facials, waxing, and injectables would be fun to dive into in the beauty industry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Resilience: I think it’s important to understand that any set backs you come across are meant to be there as learning opportunities to set you many steps forward in your journey.
2. Confidence: Everything is intimidating at first and even if there is a lot of competition in what you’re doing, no one can do it like you can. You can do anything if you whole heartedly want it, and you can do it your way.
3. Humbleness: Everyone starts off knowing nothing, but no one knows everything. There is always room to grow and learn, even if you’ve been doing something your whole life. Accepting that you can always learn new techniques and trends from anywhere and anyone can keep you ahead of the game.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Generally, my ideal client is someone who is opening minded and trustful. Knowing what you want when you come sit down at your appointment puts us in a good direction but being overly picky can set your expectations too high and set up the appointment for disappointment. Being open minded is great because as much as I would love to give you the exact hair in the picture you show me, everyone’s hair is different and EVERYONE has different results because of that. Trusting your professional is really important because they are the ones who are educated in providing you the service you seek. When you are open minded and trustful of your stylist and the process, you will have a great result regardless of any obstacles you might face during your appointment.
