Meet Jennifer Alvarado

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Alvarado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jennifer, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I grew up an only child. I was also incredibly introverted and a perfectionist. When my grandmother passed away when I was ten years old, I felt like I had lost the one person that really accepted me for me. Almost over night, I became very aware of the opinions circulating around me and became even more closed off to people.

Music was my safe place. It was how I processed my feelings as well as remembered my grandmother and the times we spent listening to music. It became that friend I had lost.

But I also found understanding and community through the music I listened too. I realized that everyone is just searching for their place…their tribe…someone to understand them. It was through music that I discovered my purpose. As simple as it sounds, my purpose is to be a friend to those that feel lost. I know how it feels to feel misunderstood and think you are the only one that feels a certain way.

My hope is to write and sing songs that speak to others and help remind them that while our circumstances might not be the same, they are not alone. They have a friend in me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter and recording artist from Vale, North Carolina and have amassed over 1 million streams on Spotify alone.

My first country EP project titled ”Playing with Fire” was released in April 2021. I released a country pop EP titled “Songbird: Part One” in July 2022. “Songbird” is a two part collection of songs that shows my growth as a writer and is sonically much different than my earlier projects. “Trigger Warning” is my current single of the “Songbird: Part Two” EP that was released on July 24, 2023. My music has a country sensibility with a pop current running through it and my sound is a mixture of country, pop and blues that reflect an eclectic blend of influences.

I have has been recognized locally for songwriting and was named ”One to Watch” by Nashville Songwriters Association in Spring 2021 and Spring 2022. I was named the “2021 Country Artist of the Year” by Indie Star Radio. My song “Curious” won “Best Pop Song” for the Indie Songwriting Awards in Winter 2022. My song “Rock This Way” was named “Best Pop Song” and “Best Overall Song” by the Indie Songwriting Awards in Spring 2022. My duet “Starz Collide” with Canadian band, The Whythouse, was named “Best Duet” for the Summer 2022 Indie Songwriting Awards. My song “Catfish” recently won a World Songwriting Award for Best Modern Country Song and I just received three Rampage Music Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Album of the Year and Single of the Year. I am currently nominated for seven International Singer Songwriter Awards, including “Entertainer of the Year” as well as three Josie Awards, including “Female Rising Star” and a Songwriter Achievement Award.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important things in my opinion are to be humble, have a good work ethic and have grit. Talent may get you in the room, but your attitude and work ethic is what keeps you there. Furthermore, when you have to earn something instead of being handed everything, you have a greater appreciation for it. You are less likely to take it for granted and lose it.

Grit helps you to keep going and persevere even when everyone around you has thrown in the towel. Especially with music, you are going to be told no…doors will slam in your face…people will criticize you and even those that you think will support you, will be the source of disappointment. It’s not about them. If you have a passion and a calling for something, you have to keep going despite the opinions of others and your current circumstances.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love working with other songwriters and artists. I think we all bring a unique style and personal experiences to the creative process. Working with others helps to give you a greater appreciation for the creation process. I love writing on my own, but some of my strongest songs are co-writes. There is so much that can be learned by working with someone else.
