We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Anne Kinder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer Anne , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I am assuming the specific question would be: How did I find purpose and focus to file an antitrust lawsuit against goliath Ticketmaster/Live nation?
I have always found purpose through the practice of law. As a young lawyer, fresh out of law school, I chose to move to El Paso, Texas. El Paso Texas has the highest per capita poverty level of any city in the State of Texas. I chose to work at El Paso Legal Assistance Society. I moved to El Paso, knowing no one and pursued my idea of justice for everyone, regardless of economic position. That then led me to positions representing asbestos victims, and moving to Washington DC to work on the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign.
After working in Washington DC, I became a single mom and opened my own law firm, Kinder Law PLLC. I was committed my daughter and being available for her and her school activities. Opening my own firm would provide me with that freedom.
I have never filed an antitrust lawsuit before and quite frankly never even took the class in law school. However, that has never stopped me in the past from pursuing an injustice and this was not different.
My daughter has been a “Swiftie” from the time she could speak. We attended Taylor Swifts Reputation tour in 2018. We had tickets to Loverfest (which was canceled because of COVID) and completed “verified fan” status and registration for Eras Tour. We assumed ticket sales would proceed in the same manner as previous sales.
However, Eras Tour sale date November 15, 2022, was horrific and nothing I had ever experienced. Every notion of equity and fair play was thrown out the window by the goliath Ticketmaster/Livenation.
At that point, I found myself at a crossroad. Do I tell my daughter that the system is unjust but that we were powerless…… or do I tell my daughter we would fight. Well, I guess you know the answer.
I found the fan base and the fan base found me. Together we decided that while fans are the most powerless against Ticketmaster, we would be undaunted. We would stand fearless against Ticketmaster.
And that is exactly what we have done. Against all odds, we stand as individual Plaintiffs, individual lawsuits in LA Circuit Court against Ticketmaster. So far, every hearing and every attempt to illuminate the Plaintiffs from a judge and jury has failed. And we will not stop until a jury hears the facts of fandom in the United States.
The fans give me purpose, my daughter gives me purpose, the justice system gives me purpose and my soul give me purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of a small law firm, focusing on personal injury and trial litigation.
I feel most excited when I represent a Plaintiff that other lawyers think is worthless and valueless. I routinely take the cases that no one else wants. Ultimate justice is achieved in the courtroom. And every Plaintiff that I represent is assured that their case will be resolved or tried. But not dropped.
At the end of the day, I am most committed to raising a daughter who is bold and fearless. That speaks up when she sees something unjust and that she never accepts “status quo” as an acceptable answer. That she asks questions and believes that our greatest goal is to pursue rights and justice for everyone, every day, for every moment she breathes.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. undeterred by societal definitions of competency. There is truly nothing I won’t attempt.
2. I live by the moto, “what would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail”.
3. Each of us is enough.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mother appreciated me for exactly who I was. My mother never tried to shape me, mold me, or make me into anything other than what I was.
I was always allowed and profoundly encouraged to be exactly who I was.
I was supported and encouraged to be my true, authentic self.
I try to parent in the same manner.
