Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Bieber. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Thats a great question! It can be especially tough in the photography world, as there is so much fantastic talent in all genres. I feel like you have to focus on your vision and really try not to be influenced by trends or what you are “supposed to be doing”. Learn the rules so you can break the rules and do not compare yourself to others. I know I have experimented in many different areas and found that I ended up coming back full circle to what I think looks great as a finished product. The right people will find you and hire you, because they like YOU! If something is a passion of yours, you are not an imposter, you belong there.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an architectural + design photographer. I work with builders, architects, real estate agents, interior designers and others to showcase projects they have recently completed. I am currently building my coastal presence in Southern California and really enjoy being able to split time between there and my native state of Colorado. I have a strong appreciation for interior design and staging. I am always finding ways to enhance my own home and love being able to photograph properties some of us can only dream of living in! I will happily travel anywhere coast to coast when commissioned to capture a finished space; as then I can also explore new areas I have not yet been to. Work hard, play hard, right?!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I attended + graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado for Multimedia. I picked up much of my knowledge through schooling, yet am not utilizing exactly what my degree was intended to be used for. I feel like a lot of people are the same way. I learned Photoshop way back then and that is probably the most essential skill learned that I still use almost daily. I began developing web sites right out of school but quickly realized it was taking the photos for the web sites, not developing the back end, is was what I really wanted to do. So I branched off and began doing family photos, then weddings and now this. While I still do take a select amount of weddings, I know I have found exactly where I want to be with photography. Experience is the best teacher. Never stop learning and always be adaptable to change. That’s the way to stay alive in almost any industry.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with! I enjoy getting together for networking events and discussing ideas plans and goals. I especially like connecting with designers, agents and builders. They have the same excitement and drive toward creating beautiful spaces from the ground up, as I do about capturing those spaces and showcasing them in the best light possible. I really enjoy touring and previewing projects as they are in progress as well. I often do both “before and after” photos for clients and am always very impressed with the final product.
