We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Gable recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think resilience is needed in life no matter what you do. I drink coffee and caffeine daily which helps keep me energized. Consistently performing standup is a source of my resilience. The adrenaline you get from performing Stand-Up comedy, especially initially in the beginning helps to keep me chasing more of that feeling of making an audience laugh. I lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise a lot. I am my best self when I surround myself with those that support me and validate my talent and hard work. Those things are what helps me to remain resilient.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Health is wealth. I love being physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. It’s all tied together. Your body is your instrument on stage. I love to exercise, eat healthy, and live a drug-free “sober” lifestyle. I have lived this way for years and I am starting to see it effects a lot of entertainers in Hollywood and a lot more are trying to get sober these days.
The second is being authentic and staying true to yourself. I am not too much of a people pleaser. I have developed healthy boundaries over the years. I do my art for myself mostly and if other people like it, great! Even better. Staying authentic helps me write freely and be creative.
The third is, always be learning, always be adapting and staying current. I’m always learning something new every day and reading. Gaining knowledge in editing my own videos and audio has recently helped my career and saved me money. Learning other skills to help produce my content and market it well.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Performing Stand-Up is a lot like riding a bike to me. I have noticed I’m a lot calmer and I don’t get as nervous or even at all before I perform on stage. I have performed thousands of times on stage over 10 years. I used to do 4-5 mics a night sometimes more when I lived in NYC. Crowd work is something I’ve started to incorporate into my sets since audiences love to be a part of the show. Also, becoming more of an independent artist and expanding my other businesses. I think it’s good to become as much of an independent artist. I utilize the power of the internet and all the streaming platforms to gain audiences. This way I do not have to rely on anyone else to further your career.
