We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I grew up in Kingston projects in Birmingham Alabama. I don’t really remember my childhood and I believe that is due to my childhood trauma so I blocked a lot of things out, but there are some things I remember vividly which aren’t happy memories. The feeling of contentment never sat well with me, I didn’t want to be comfortable with life. I felt like “living comfortably” and with “what’s familiar” would cause me stuck in an environment I didn’t want to be in or it would lead me back to the projects. I didn’t like my environment as a child or a teenager so I made it a thing to leave far from it the moment I graduated. So I would rather take risks and experience something I’ve never done before rather than stick to something I know. I would be creating my personal hell if I didn’t take risks.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a writer/teacher/counselor. I have a business that is just getting off the ground A Jenuine Space. A Jenuine Space is a community platform for healing trauma, expressing feelings, building confidence, a space where people return to their authentic selves.
I’ve written children’s books as well as poetry books to uplift people and help them with their mental & emotional health. I also have a podcast in talks of mental health called Jenuine Talks on all podcast platforms.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Guiding, writing, and doing what I love. My life itself has led me down the field of psychology. Not knowing it at the time I’ve always had a knack for guiding and mentoring others with my advice and experiences. The best advice I can give is follow your gut, do what makes you happy, fail because those are the most important moments that will mold you and put you on the right path you’re destined for. You learn through your failures. Ask for help, don’t be afraid of your own power.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
There is no one in particular to state at this very moment, but I want to work with others that love to help others with their health in every aspect. Mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The community I’ve built is based on the help I desired as a child, teenager, and an adult. My love language is words of affirmations, quality time, and acts of service. So I would love to work with others that share the same drive of helping others through love, compassion, and spreading knowledge because we need more love and healing in this world.
