Hi Jennifer, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic was heavily influenced by my parents. They were born and raised in the Azores, Portugal (on the island of Santa Maria, shout out to my Portuguese community, I love you!!). They came to the United States for the same reason most adventurous people do, for the liberty and the right to lead an abundant life and prosper in a new country. Their leap of faith paved the way for me and my siblings to become the best that we can be in our respective fields and communities. I remember growing up watching my dad and mom work hard to provide for our family. Of course we had a lot of fun and went on vacations, but the work ethic remained strong. They taught me that having pride in my work is paramount, which I’m extremely intentional about. I believe that offering an amazing and relaxing experience for my clients is golden, as well as relishing in your own wonderful masterpiece to boot!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
After many years growing up in the art world and eventually attending college for design, I decided Hair was my true calling. I worked and trained in Boston/NYC, eventually making it to LA to dive into the Celebrity hair world, which has always been a dream of mine! Moving to LA has been one of my many favorite decisions and it’s been such an awesome ride since I landed. I made my name through working with stellar professionals and people who really know hair inside and out, and for this I am so grateful.
I specialize in Women and Men’s cutting and styling, and Men’s Grooming (hair and makeup). I’m known for an effortless, glamorous looking texture when it comes to styling and vibe, and known for beautiful, long layered cuts. What sets me apart from the rest is my technical and artistic approach to hair, as well as a welcoming and warm personality. My clients feel at ease and the experience is professional and playful once they’re in my chair. It’s a win-win!
I love working with creative, fun and fashion forward professionals. I am also a Hair Cutting Educator and will continue to so this as I believe you never stop learning. Expansion of the mind and skill set is what sets me apart and is so valuable!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Adapting to any situation and absorbing a lot of knowledge from a variety of professionals has been so helpful and valuable in my career. It expanded my skill set tremendously! I highly suggest saying “YES!” to jobs in the early part of your career, it greatly helped with exposure of working with so many types of clients/personalities. And definitely keep learning and updating your skill set. I recommend learning about a tool/product/technique that you would normally resist and instead educate yourself on how it could assist in your already amazing tool kit, you never know!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
The best advice/strategy I can share is to allow yourself to sit in silence and breathe intentionally, it’s helped greatly! It gives me clarity of the mind and ease in my body, which is essential!. I’ve also been practicing Transcendental Meditation for a long time and it’s been my solace in the many waves of life.
