We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Nowicki. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Jennifer, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Ultimately I overcame imposter syndrome (not completely, but mainly) when I represented the USA tea industry for two world tea conferences in China. Not immediately, but it was slowly realizing I am knowledgeable and an expert in tea. You would not be invited to represent the US tea industry if you do not know much about tea. I also have over 25 years in the tea industry too. I also use a technique that has helped me quite a bit through my life. I sometimes pretend it is someone else and how would I feel if I heard someone else had the same prerequisites. I would be impressed by their drive, determination and their knowledge. I also know I am not the only person who thinks this way. I overhear people saying that a lot about other people who have great achievements and education. I also have had people say that about my education and the quality of my teas.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three skills or qualities I have are deep knowledge of my industry, problem solving, and determination. I have been in my industry for over 25 years and have been professionally trained by the Specialty Tea Institute (the education arm of the USA Tea Association), which allowed me to represent the US tea industry in two world tea conferences in China. I would not have been able to represent the US tea industry if I did not have a deep knowledge of my industry. My whole life I have been a problem solver. This has helped me get through tough times and figure out ways to make my business progress to the next level. This helps when some may give up, you can usually find a way to make things work. Sometimes my determination was the main reason I continued running my business. Determination can be a power tool and asset for my business.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I try to figure out what needs to be done first or the higher priorities and do them first. Also when it is a huge project I try to get small stuff done and tackle parts and sometimes go to other parts until I am close to done. Then I tend to make sure it all works smoothly together. That is what I did for some of my huge papers in college. Get the front page, outline, maybe work on a section that I feel I can tackle easily, so it is slowly getting closer to being done. I would say work with your strengths that way too. Because this works for me does not mean it will work for you, To me getting even the smaller parts makes me feel like I am progressing and not get so overwhelmed by the concept of a huge project.
