We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Perkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Creative block has been one of my greatest challenges, but over the years, I’ve learned to overcome it by exploring different mediums to reignite inspiration. This often includes painting, sketching, or immersing myself in nature through the gardens Oklahoma has to offer—all of which reliably spark my creativity. Throughout my four-year journey as an artist, I’ve also come to understand the importance of listening to my body and allowing myself the time to rest and recharge when needed.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a handmade artist specializing in floral and botanical art, working primarily with crepe paper and cardstock as part of my mixed media practice. I strive to bring a unique perspective to each collection or project by adding personal and creative touches that set my work apart.
Originally, my brand was called Flowers by Nera, based on my maiden name. However, I’ve since rebranded to Petal Pioneer—a name that deeply resonates with me and reflects the artist I’ve grown into. It symbolizes my passion for floral design while embracing my willingness to explore new mediums and techniques as my creativity evolves.
One of my upcoming collections is inspired by astrology, a theme close to my heart and one I believe will make meaningful, seasonless gifts for fellow astrology lovers. Another collection currently in the works is deeply personal because it is about home, The island of Guam. It’s been nine years since I last visited, and in moments of being homesick, I’ve found comfort in recreating the island’s vibrant native blooms through my art.
My main goal is to spark joy. I hope my florals bring beauty and happiness to those who experience them.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities that have had the most impact are resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of creative curiosity. Resilience has helped me push through creative blocks and periods of self-doubt. As an artist, it’s easy to get discouraged, especially in the early stages. But learning to trust the process—even when it feels slow—has been key to my growth. Adaptability has also played a huge role. Whether it’s switching mediums to find new inspiration or being out in the gardens, being open to change has allowed me to evolve naturally as both an artist and a business owner. Lastly, creative curiosity has been my guiding force. I’m always exploring new themes, textures, canvases, etc… This curiosity keeps my work feeling fresh and personal. For those starting out.
For anyone starting out, don’t be too hard on yourself. Growth takes time, and every small step counts. My advice: don’t be afraid to experiment. If something doesn’t work, you’ll still learn from it. If you’re just starting out, let yourself explore and try what excites you. Your unique perspective is what will make your art stand out.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
This question is definitely a loaded one! Honestly, the artists who work in the same field as I do have been my greatest source of support. One resource that has had a huge impact on me is the Paper Talk Podcast. Quynh Nguyen, Jessie Chui, and Sara Kim are incredibly talented artists who have been instrumental in building and nurturing our paper art community. Their insights and stories have truly changed my perspective and inspired me deeply.
For me, even just sitting quietly and listening to these artists share their journeys—the challenges they’ve faced and overcome—has been incredibly motivating. It reminds me that I’m part of a larger community, and that shared experience has helped me push through my own obstacles and grow as an artist.
