Meet Jennifer Schlosser

We recently connected with Jennifer Schlosser and have shared our conversation below.

Jennifer, thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.

In my late 20s, I was diagnosed with ADD. Since then, I’ve realized that my mind is constantly in overdrive. I’m always analyzing situations from every possible angle, and I believe my ADD plays a big role in that. It pushes me to think deeply and evaluate things in a way that others might not.

I’m also a very considerate person. I never want anyone to feel left out or hurt, so I take the time to think through all potential outcomes before making a decision. I try to anticipate how each choice might affect others, because their feelings matter to me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at age 21. During my final year of college, I interned at the Waynesville Police Department while managing a full course load, a full-time accounting job during the week, and a part-time house-cleaning job on the weekends. When the economy took a downturn and jobs in my field of study were scarce, I made the decision to continue my career in accounting.

My journey in the accounting world actually began when I was 16, working for my parents’ custom log home–building company, where I handled payroll and cleaned houses. After graduation, I remained at my accounting job and continued to learn everything on my own—without any formal training. I’ve always had a natural talent for math, and over time, I realized that accounting offered stability and opportunity in a changing economy.

By December 2022, after many years in the accounting field, I found myself feeling burnt out and searching for something new to reignite my creativity. I’ve always been a crafty person, and one day I stumbled across soap-making videos on TikTok—and everything changed.

What started as a hobby quickly became a passion. I fell in love with every loaf I created and discovered a deep joy in crafting something beautiful and useful with my own hands. Today, I’m proud to share that passion with my community through teaching soap-making classes at my new location in Waynesville, NC.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three Qualities That Shaped My Journey

Work Ethic and Perseverance
From a young age, I learned the value of hard work. Balancing a full course load, two jobs, and an internship taught me that consistency and determination are key to success. That same mindset helped me build a long career in accounting and later, start my own soap-making business.
My advice: Don’t be afraid to work hard, even when the payoff isn’t immediate. Every skill and experience adds up to something valuable down the road—even if it doesn’t make sense at the time.

Adaptability and Self-Learning
I never had formal training in accounting, yet I built a career in it through self-teaching and persistence. Later, I applied that same approach when learning to make soap. Being willing to learn, adapt, and figure things out as you go opens up endless possibilities.
My advice: Stay curious and don’t wait for someone to hand you a roadmap. Dive in, research, ask questions, and learn from trial and error. Confidence grows through experience, not perfection.

Creativity and Passion
Discovering soap making reignited my creative spirit and reminded me how important it is to do something that brings joy. Creativity doesn’t just live in art—it’s also in problem-solving, design, and the way you connect with others.
My advice: Explore new hobbies and interests, even if they seem unrelated to your career. You never know which one might light a spark or even lead you toward your true calling.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I start to feel overwhelmed, I always go back to my to-do list. Because I have ADD, my mind tends to jump quickly from one thought to another, and it’s easy for ideas or tasks to slip away. Keeping a running list helps me stay grounded and organized. It’s my way of bringing structure to the chaos—making sure I don’t forget important things and helping me refocus when my thoughts start to scatter.
