Meet Jennifer Vasquez

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Vasquez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jennifer, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from the amount of “no’s” I have received in my career. As a performer, in the audition room, there has been many times I got a role and many times I did not get the role- but I promise you there were more rejections than yes’ and that’s just the reality with things in life. This builds your character to become stronger. In the rehearsal room, we practice the skill of trying different techniques or directions that work on stage, and don’t work, depending on the director’s vision. The skill of adaptability is built alongside resilience.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a performing artist from the Bronx. I started developing a love for music and singing at a very young age. I would hear my mother sing ballads from across the hall, to my room and it awakened music in my soul. I started writing lyrics at the age of 10. I’m very blessed to have been raised in a household where the performing arts was taken seriously. My mother bought me my first piano. I started learning music theory in my performing arts middle, high school and college. I went to Lehman college where I received my Bachelors of fine Arts in Multimedia Performing Arts, and a minor in Music.

My main focus right now, is recording my music and releasing more of it. My music focuses on all aspects of romantic love and about motivation through God. My messages usually are around hope and about having faith in God. It’s about finding yourself in the middle of a spiritual storm and not giving up because God has our back in the direction he is taking us. He knows what’s best for us.

I recently released my first official single on February 23. It’s called “Where do I Go”? I am currently working on releasing an EP in the summer that has already been recorded, and a Christian Album to be released at the end of this year.

Aside from my artistic career I am also an educator and vocal coach of all ages. Feel free to reach out to me through my Instagram for vocal classes or follow me to tune in to some of my new music!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Time management, Networking, and Communication.

My best advice would be consistency in anything you want to achieve or do. My other advice is to do all things with love. Your hobbies, jobs, interests, career, mental health and spiritual health are like a plant- If you don’t water it, it dries out. There will be many mistakes to learn from, there will be many times where you thought you would be somewhere, but are not and end up somewhere else on your path, but if you put all your faith and trust in God’s plan and do it all with love it’ll be easier to trust the process. Consistency doesn’t mean burn yourself out, but to move at your own pace. It doesn’t matter how fast you go, as long as you don’t stop.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was when my mother bought me my first piano, which I still own. My parents commitment in supporting me in the arts was super impactful in my life and I am so grateful for that everyday.
