We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Chavez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It was 2007, I was a junior in high school, and I was playing a soccer game with my school team. The game was so good and my teammates and I were very happy to be winning 2-0. I was on my way to scoring the third goal when suddenly the last defender from the opposing team shoved my body so hard to try to win the ball before it got to me. The push was so strong, my body went the opposite way of my knee. As I heard a loud pop in my knee, my body collapsed to the ground. I tried to stand up but I had lost all of my strength. I had to be carried out of the field. Weeks later, an MRI revealed an ACL tear and the orthopedic surgeon advised I get surgery. At the time, I thought surgery would fix everything. I didn’t realize I had to do physical therapy for a couple of months afterwards. I followed through and did all that I had to do. However, I did not enjoy going to therapy. I was young and didn’t realize the importance of it. When I got discharged from physical therapy, I was already a senior in high school. For some reason, I didn’t feel ready to play soccer again. There was more of a mental block vs a physical and I didn’t know what to do about it. Fast forward to my high school graduation. Then, it was time for college and having to choose a major. I really struggled with this because my whole life, I envisioned myself as a professional soccer player playing in the big leagues. However, that was no longer an option for me especially since I wasn’t capable of competing in soccer at the same level; I felt I had lost my identity. In college, I chose to major in Business and soon after, I changed my major to Exercise and Sport Science. I knew I wanted to work with athletes but I still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I had an epiphany. Then, the thought came to me. A career as a physical therapist! I became fascinated with this idea. I did my research on what prerequisites I had to complete and I got it done. I was able to complete 4 years as an undergraduate at St. Mary’s University and from there, I went on to the University of the Incarnate Word to obtain my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, which took me another 3 years. During my third clinical rotation as a student, I was asked if I wanted to apply for a job. That is how I started seeing my purpose come to life. I now understood God had other plans for me to use my experience as a way of being able to help others who are in similar situations. My purpose now is to be able to help young girls and guys by educating and helping them with their recovery journeys. I’m very much thankful for my experience because it has led me to something bigger than what I could have ever imagined. I worked for Memorial Hermann Health System for eight years and have now started my own practice by the name of Route 2 Recovery.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the founder of Route 2 Recovery. Route 2 Recovery is a Physical Therapy and Wellness practice in Houston. It was founded on the idea that our community deserves better care than what is currently offered in many therapy settings. We wanted to stand out by providing compassionate and personalized, one-on-one care to our clients. We focus on finding the root cause of every problem and creating personalized treatment, without having a middle man AKA insurance companies involved. Our patients come to us because we have built a special community for them to find hope again. We emphasize the idea that it is never too late to transform your life for the better.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey have been the passion that I have for helping others, consistency in my actions towards achieving any goals that I set for myself and persistence to be able to overcome obstacles and never giving up. The advice I would give someone who is starting their entrepreneurial journey, is to have a lot of patience and be prepared for the unexpected. Finding what you are the most passionate about in life is the most important thing. It will lead you to your purpose. Working with a coach or mentor is very crucial throughout this process. It will be one of the greatest investments you will ever make. It will save you lots of headaches, time and money in the long-run.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Many people live with chronic and severe pain. However, I cannot treat everyone and I am also not the right fit for everyone. My ideal client is someone who has recognized they have a problem, are willing to share what and how they feel, and are ready to take the first step in getting evaluated. My ideal client loves, values and prioritizes their health and wellness above all else. They understand that without health, nothing else matters. If they are not healthy or feeling good, they will not be able to enjoy the goodness of life. We can treat any conditions but we specialize in helping patients who suffer from chronic back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction and sports-related injuries.
