Meet Jenny Ngo

We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Ngo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jenny , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

Being first generation Asian American, we were raised to work hard and become resilient to change & challenges. I eventually worked in many fine dining restaurants including the best restaurant in the world. During my time in restaurants I gained a lot of knowledge on how the food industry operates from front and back of house. Working in precise restaurant where every detail mattered a lot, it has shaped me in many ways from the long hours to learning how to manage teams to obtain goals. This played a huge role on how I manage my business and train our team to see the bigger picture. We opened Telescope Coffee during the pandemic. With many factors of uncertainties of the world, we had to constantly go back to the drawing board and figure out where we need to pivot or make changes to. Being resilient played a huge role for us to not give up and continue to grow. We were able to move to a new location that is double our previous cafe and expand our team to twice the size.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

We are an Asian Women-owned business located in San Francisco. Telescope Coffee is founded by Jenny & Annie who are childhood best friends, both born and raised in San Francisco. Our mission when creating Telescope Coffee has been to create a community space. We host many pop-ups in our cafe that highlight local artisan makers. With my background being in pastry for over a decade, we make all of our pastries, syrups, concentrates in house. This makes us special because we only carry pastries and drinks unique to our shop. We have partnered with local vendors like Cosmic Dust Coffee Roaster who has created a special espresso blend named “Telescope” which is our house espresso we have been using since opening. Our espresso is only reserved for our cafe as well.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three most important qualities and skills that are important to have is to be open-minded, time management & being able to adapt.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I plan meetings with my business partner to strategize our game plan and goals. It helps to have friends that are also business owners who can relate to your situation or has been there before and able to give helpful advice to overcome challenges.
