Meet Jenny Watson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenny Watson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jenny, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

As a child, my family frequented the city pool nearly every day. As the youngest of four kids, I would run around that pool like I owned the place and the lifeguards quickly nicknamed me “Happy Jenny”. A small bubbly blond headed child, my optimism was apparent to everyone I came in contact with. As an adult, that same optimism bleeds into literally everything I do. For those that are enneagam people, I am a 7 which means that I LOVE fun and the feelings of sadness and disapointment are nearly unbearable for me. Ultimately, I believe that my optimism is deeply engrained in who I am and how I was made; however, the foundation of that optimism lies in my faith. I have grown up in a Christian family and church and following the man Jesus Christ is foundational to who I am. It’s His example I follow and it’s the eternal hope I have in Him that helps me not be overcome by the challenges of life. At this point in my life, I have challenges coming from multiple directions. I am a working mom of three little ones, daily finding a rhythm that honors the responsibility I have as the mom and wife of my family as well as the leader of my booming and wonderful small business. I maintain a solid optimistic outlook on life by treating others the way I would want to be treated and never taking myself too seriously. Even one of our family values is “We love to laugh.” My gauge of success in anything I do is often how “fun” something is. If it’s not fun, is it really worth doing?

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am the owner and CEO of The Elderberry Co, a small business I started in my home kitchen almost 7 years ago. Since then, I have grown from a one-woman show to a nationwide brand and household name selling our line of health and wellness products to families across the country. Elderberry syrup is a natural and effective way to support your immune system and fight off ailments such as colds, flu and allergies. As a young mom, it was a staple in our house that I used to keep my family healthy and out of the doctor’s office. The Elderberry Syrup we brew at The Elderberry Co is small batch, hand crafted and fresh, made with a blend of berries, spices and honey. While it is our most popular product, we have expanded our product line to offer other amazing products that help keep families healthy and active. We offer Elderberry Gummies (made with our Elderberry Syrup), Collagen + Biotin Gummies for hair/skin/nail growth, Magnesium Balm and more.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My ability to connect with and welcome others, my ability to lead a team with a thriving work culture, and my drive to see a goal and know the steps I need to take to achieve it. My advice to others early in their journey: give yourself permission to suck, to be bad at something and then use that experience to learn and grow from it. Also, always assume positive intent in others.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

I had a baby almost one year ago. I knew I needed to take time off to recover and care for my baby which meant that I needed to build a team who could “run the show” without me. I was able to successfully take off 6 months of the year and my team not only continued operations but we experienced a 26% growth from the prior year! I was super proud of my leadership development in empowering my team to function without me.
