Meet Jerel Agatep

We were lucky to catch up with Jerel Agatep recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jerel, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I beat imposter syndrome by owning my story. Moving to the U.S. at 15, I was self-conscious about my accent and thrown into a world I didn’t fully understand. My first job was as a dishwasher, and I worked my way up—busboy, cashier, waiter, cook—before putting myself through UC Irvine, saving up for law school, and earning my J.D. at UC Hastings.

In both law and golf content creation, it’s easy to feel like I don’t belong. But my journey isn’t a weakness—it’s my edge. Hard work, resilience, and seeing things from a different perspective set me apart. In law, it helps me advocate. In golf, it makes my content relatable to those who feel like outsiders. Instead of questioning if I belong, I’ve learned to own what makes me different—and that’s been my greatest strength.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

What began as a lighthearted way to document my golf swings has transformed into an exhilarating venture. In January 2025, I challenged myself: dedicate a year to see where @jrealgolf on Instagram could lead. If it flourished, fantastic; if not, I’d continue my legal career.

Fast forward, and @jrealgolf has become a vibrant community. I’ve partnered with top-tier brands like LAB Golf, known for their innovative putter designs; Vice Golf, celebrated for premium golf balls and stylish apparel; and Rapsodo, creators of cutting-edge launch monitors that bring pro-level analytics to everyday golfers. These collaborations have enriched my content and connected me with fellow enthusiasts worldwide.

Beyond the digital realm, I’m venturing into the physical side of the sport. I’m in the process of opening a golf simulator franchise, aiming to provide an immersive, year-round 24/7 golfing experience. This endeavor aligns with my mission to make golf more accessible and enjoyable for all.

Balancing this passion project with my legal profession has been seamless. The discipline and strategic thinking from my law career complement the creativity and engagement required for @jrealgolf. This journey has been incredible, and I’m eager to see where it leads next.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey, three key qualities have been pivotal: resilience, adaptability, and strategic networking. Facing challenges head-on, from adapting to a new country at 15 to balancing dual careers in law and golf content creation, resilience has been my cornerstone. Navigating diverse roles—from dishwasher to lawyer to golf influencer—required a keen ability to adapt. Building meaningful connections has opened doors to collaborations with top brands and new ventures. For those starting their journey, focus on these areas to navigate challenges and seize opportunities effectively.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The primary challenge I’m facing with @jrealgolf is standing out in the crowded golf content landscape. To address this, I’m focusing on the underserved community of left-handed golfers, who represent only about 5-7% of golfers. Recognizing the lack of tailored content for lefties, I’ve launched the #ThroughTheLeftieLens series, offering tips and tricks specifically for left-handed players, and #TheLeftieLookbook, showcasing golf apparel and gear suited for left-handed golfers.

By emphasizing authenticity and sharing my unique journey from dishwasher to lawyer to golf influencer, I aim to inspire others with similar backgrounds. Engaging directly with my audience through Q&A sessions, polls, and live streams helps build a loyal community. Investing in high-quality production ensures my videos are visually appealing and informative, setting them apart in a saturated market.

Through these initiatives, I strive to carve out a distinct niche in the golf content arena and foster meaningful connections with my audience.
