We recently connected with Jeremiah Slavit and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremiah, thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.
Durning the later half of the pandemic many people were laid off, I was one of them. This helped build my passion of self sustainability and independence from the systems we normally rely on. My primary focus was to find a way to incorporate sustainable and nutrient rich foods into my life and bring them to my local community. This became the driving force behind the creation of San Antonio Microgreens.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have a passion for health and nutrition. After learning that microgreens can be up to 40 times more nutritious than full grown vegetables I decided to incorporate them into my daily diet. I was able to witness first hand the power nutrient rich foods have on the human body. Adding microgreens to my diet regularly over the course of one year allowed my body to reduce the amount of toxins it had been storing and reduced my overall weight from 295lbs down to 205lbs.
Witnessing the change microgreens have had in my own life, it has been my deepest desire to help make microgreens accessible in my local community.
I have loved growing microgreens and wanted to share the experience of growing with everyone. This helped us create our favorite product to date, the “urban farm in a jar”. Our self-watering grow kit simplifies farming for everyone. We have refined our jars to grow a variety of diverse microgreens in as little as seven days after planting.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Willingness to humble yourself and continue to learn from others. In simple terms be teachable. This has helped me to be able to absorb information from multiple people and sources.
Next is be flexible in your creativity. Without fully locking into a specific way of thinking, you free yourself to assimilate all the information and channel it into a creative outlet for your business.
And as cliche as it sounds diligence and resilience are critical in order to endure in any business but particularly in farming. There are many trials you have to overcome. From crop failure, crazy weather that disrupts markets, to something as simple as consistent planting and harvesting schedules, diligence and resilience will help you succeed.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Currently our biggest struggle is avoiding burn out as we do the small daily taxing activities that are required in running a farm. From dealing with roots to harvesting trays, planting, moving dirt, and washing trays. It is important to remember that running a business is more than just a great idea it is the daily execution of essential actions needed for success.
When we look back at our freshly harvested products every week and our happy customers it helps us remember why do this. Focusing on our products and how we serve our community truly helps us avoid burn out.
