Meet Jeremy Madrid

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeremy Madrid. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jeremy, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My work ethic started from a tremendously young age. I was always into sports and baseball became my passion. Both of my parents have a lot to do with my work ethic. Both are very strong, self sufficient, and extremely dependable. I would have to say that I get a lot of my grit from my father with him being in the military and my perseverance and passion from my mother. I’ve faced a few difficult challenges in my life, but once I set my sights on something, I always see it through.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Where do I begin? I would have to say that my passion for baseball when I was younger has significantly driven me to where I am today. Baseball was always an incredible experience. I spent 17 years of my life dedicated to something that I really enjoyed. Baseball brought me to number of opportunities and experiences. I was quite lucky to experience baseball in different states as well as at the collegiate level. With baseball being my complete and entire focus, there was always that thought of “what if it doesn’t it work out”? So, this moment came between my junior and senior year of college when I began to feel some problems developing in my shoulder. Ironically, I was enrolled in the Athletic Training program at Colorado State University – Pueblo, where I was learning about what was happening to me at the time. I developed popping, clicking, and a decrease in velocity on pitches in my throwing arm. This led to my diagnosis of a labrum tear. Although, the timing of this was not ideal for any person or athlete, I had to make a decision. I ultimately decided to end my baseball career there and continue my education in the health sciences.

I graduated from Colorado State University – Pueblo with by bachelors degree in Athletic Training and pursued my Masters degree, which led me across the country to Pennsylvania. I attended West Chester University – Pennsylvania, where after an additional two years of education I achieved my Masters degree in Athletic Training. While studying at West Chester University – Pennsylvania, I had the incredible opportunity to work at Villanova University. I had done some PRN work as an ATC in Pennsylvania but it was when I started working at Villanova University when everything really kicked off. I began taking care of the field hockey team as my first assignment, which was an absolutely incredible experience! I continued to stay with Villanova University for another year in which I was now administering care to Football and Women’s Water Polo. I was now able to experience incredible top level competition as well as travel to numerous locations. After my couple of years at Villanova University, I moved back to, where I now reside, Colorado.

Colorado is where I was born and raised and quite frankly, its nice to be closer to family. After returning to Colorado for a short time, I was wondering what would be next? I obtained an assistant athletic training position for a high school in Denver and in just a short 8 months, I was promoted to the lead athletic trainer. Now, this wasn’t quite enough for me. I quickly pursued my Doctorate in Athletic Training at A.T. Still University. I know what you’re thinking, why? Well, in honesty, why not. Little did I know this would be a cornerstone to where I am at today. I was able to meet a number of incredible people while studying at A.T. Still University. These individuals were incredibly brilliant and when I tell you they push for both change and the ability to thrive at your highest capabilities, they ensure that you are able to achieve anything that you can put your mind to. This is where a lightbulb instantly lit up for me. While my time at A.T. Still University, I had the incredible pleasure to meet and collaborate with a current business owner, Alicia Yamamoto. Alicia, was my first contact when it came to my next big thing, starting a business. With my combined experience and now my Doctorate in Athletic Training, it was time to hit the ground running.

Since moving back to Colorado, becoming the lead athletic trainer at my current position, and achieving my Doctorate; I have taken on a number of opportunities. I currently function as the lead Athletic Trainer at the high school I am at and the strength and conditioning coach. Within the last year, I have created a strength and conditioning program at the high school and there has been some incredible changes. Our football team the first year I was the lead Athletic Trainer, we suffered a tremendous number of injuries. Shortly after is when I introduced the strength and conditioning program. After doing so, our injury numbers decreased by 55%. This was an incredible feat to see and quite frankly is another aspect that I enjoy doing.

Athletic Training isn’t a profession that you just get into, there usually a reason all of Athletic Trainers get into it. This can range from previous passions for sports or health education to season-ending injuries that took us out from going professionally. At least, that’s what we tell all of our athletes. To me athletic training is an incredible opportunity to selflessly help others, its the ability to guide someone from the time of the initial injury to seeing them return to their desired sport, Athletic Training is an incredibly unique healthcare profession that can help more than just athletes. It can encompass sports performance aspects, rehabilitation, medical referrals for additional care, nutrition, and many more.

As for what is next? I’ve taken on the challenge to create my own business that encompasses all of the aforementioned aspects. I’ve created a business that seeks to provide care to a number of individuals, whether they are current athletes or former athletes, or are just looking to become healthier. It consists of a collaborative approach between both the clinician and the patient/client and use the best available evidence to guide the correct forms of treatment. This is more than just an exchange between a clinician and a patient/client, but creating an environment unlike the others where care is tailored individually and where all are treated as a family. Kinexus Performance and Rehabilitation is currently in it’s early stages but currently offers sports performance and nutrition services. Although, “Kinexus” is in its early stages, it is hopeful to be fully operational very soon.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities or skills that I think were the most impactful to my journey were grit, humility, and a growth mindset . Grit, being the ability to persevere through any challenge, quitting not being an option, and having such passion for what it is that your are pursuing. Humility, being the ability to know your limits and able to understand others perspectives. Finally, a growth mindset, this quality has probable been the most impactful in my journey. A growth mindset is the ability to continually move forward through all obstacles including when you have reached your highest potential. You’re always capable of improving, your limits are only set by you. As for others that could develop or improve on these qualities or skills, there are a number of ways to ds so but this is what I would recommend. When things get hard, don’t give up, seek help from others that have overcome challenges in their life. Be humble, ask questions when you are unsure or do not have the answers. Finally, don’t be afraid to pursue something that seems impossible to others. It may seem that way for others but surround yourself with like-minded individuals that have similar goals.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Granted that I am in the early stages of building the remaining parts of my business, I would like to collaborate with others. Particularly, those that have or are looking to start their own business. More specifically, athletic trainers that have started their own practice. I’d like to collaborate with any and all no matter the stage they are in. Any are welcome to collaborate and can reach me through my email [email protected].
