Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jerome Ro Brooks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jerome Ro, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my parents. Watching them as a kid do what they needed to do to provide for my three sisters and I. Working two and even three jobs at times to keep a roof over our heads, food in our stomachs and clothes on our backs. As parents you don’t get any days off when you have kids depending on you for their survival.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My birth name is Jerome Curtis Brooks Jr.; named after my dad. I was born and raised in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland. I’ve always been an entertainer of some sort since I can remember. As a youth, my grandmother and great aunt would have my sisters and I compete against one another in dance battles for the family to win prizes, nickels and pennies mostly.
I’m an actor and have been for over three decades now. I am mostly known for my three season story ark on Tyler Perry’s first ever, hit drama series, “The Haves and the Have Nots”. Several other projects that I’ve been fortunate enough to star in are; Showtime’s Shameless, BET’s The New Edition Story, FX’s Sons Of Anarchy, Tubi’s The Caregiver, Starzplay Medinah and FOX’s Brooklyn Nine Nine to name a few. Watching television as a kid and seeing kids act in shows made me want to become an actor. I love it because it’s exciting. I get to play roles that are so different than who I really am. The best thing about being an actor is being able to bring a character to life and also having people/fans, supporters respect and appreciate your work.
Earlier this year (2024), I was honored by my home town of Baltimore, Md., by having my childhood neighborhood street re-named after me, ‘Jerome Ro Brooks Way’. I was also inducted into the famous ‘Hollywood Museum’ for Black History month by having my wardrobe from an episode of Shameless being exhibited behind those famous glass showcases. I am truly blessed and grateful.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were and still are, being focused, being able to follow directions and my tenacity, the never taking no for an answer spirit.
If you are an aspiring actor or even embarking on a career in other fields my advice would be to have a plan, learn your craft and go for it with faith, determination and dedication. And lastly, stay away from hater, naysayer’s.
